Once infamous for dacoit activities, Chitrakoot – known as the beloved abode of Bhagwan Ram during his exile – is now being transformed under the leadership of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The district, once terrorised by notorious dacoit gangs like Dadua, Thokia, and others, is now basking in the light of development. With increased connectivity, spiritual appeal, and enhanced tourist amenities, Chitrakoot is emerging as a prime destination for both pilgrims and investors.
In the Treta Yuga, it was in Chitrakoot that Bhagwan Ram, along with Sita Mata and Lakshman ji, spent a significant part of their 14-year exile. Chitrakoot found a special place in Bhagwan Ram’s heart – he even described it as dearer than Ayodhya. The serene forests, holy rivers like the Mandakini, and the divine presence of sages like Atri and Valmiki made this region spiritually vibrant.
Tulsidas, in the Ramcharitmanas, beautifully described Chitrakoot:
“चित्रकूट गिरि करहु निवासू। तहँ तुम्हार सब भाँति सुपासू”
(O Bhagwan, reside in Chitrakoot where everything is conducive for you.)
He also declared its glory as unlimited:
“चित्रकूट महिमा अमित कही महामुनि गाइ”, meaning “The glory of Chitrakoot is beyond words.”
The meeting of Bharat and Bhagwan Ram in Chitrakoot is considered as an eternal symbol of brotherly love and selfless duty. The region served not just as a refuge for the royal trio but also as a canvas where Bhagwan Ram integrated the forest dwellers like Kol and Kirat into mainstream life – spreading the message of social harmony. With the grandeur of Kashi and Ayodhya already rejuvenated under the current regime, Chitrakoot has now become the next hotspot for spiritual tourism.
During the recent Prayagraj Mahakumbh, the district witnessed a surge in visitors. Prior to the event, around 2,500 vehicles arrived daily; during the Mahakumbh, this number rose to 7,000 and peaked at over 14,000 on weekends and holidays. This rising in increase of the tourists is a testimony to Chitrakoot’s growing religious appeal.
The ropeway developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model has also added to the tourism charm, providing visitors a scenic and convenient way to explore this sacred town.
To ensure Chitrakoot’s all-round development, the Chitrakoot Dham Teerth Vikas Parishad has been established. The government has undertaken significant steps to develop the region, especially focusing on its tourism and infrastructure. A major milestone is the construction of a new airport, which is the first in the Bundelkhand region. Better road connectivity via the Bundelkhand Expressway has also significantly improved accessibility.
On April 8, the UP cabinet approved a budget of Rs 50 crore for improving tourist facilities. This includes:
- Rs 12 crore allocated for enhancing tourist facilities along the Ram Van Gaman route
- Rs 17.56 crore for a tourist facilitation center at Devangana, near the airport
- Rs 20.45 crore for improving the Kamadgiri Parikrama Marg, a spiritually important walking trail
Initial funding of Rs 50 lakh, Rs 70 lakh, and Rs 75 lakh has already been released for these projects. Additionally, beautification of key spots like the Ram Ghat, Tulsidas’s birthplace Rajapur, and Maharishi Valmiki’s ashram at Lalpur is underway. Chitrakoot is emerging not only as a prominent spiritual destination but also as a promising investment hub. To boost regional development, the government has established the Prayagraj-Chitrakoot Development Region, encompassing six districts: Prayagraj, Chitrakoot, Fatehpur, Banda, Kaushambi, and Hamirpur. The objective is to draw both pilgrims and investors.
During the Mahakumbh, CM Yogi announced that Chitrakoot would be one of the six nodes of the UP Defence Corridor, boosting industrial potential and local employment.
Chitrakoot’s accessibility is being significantly improved through a series of major infrastructure projects. The Chitrakoot Link Expressway is set to connect Bundelkhand with Chitrakoot via the Prayagraj-Rewa corridor, ensuring faster and more efficient access for both tourists and businesses.
Complementing this is the Satna-Chitrakoot Greenfield Highway, a four-lane road announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, being developed under the Bharatmala Project to enhance connectivity between Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh, and further westward towards Mumbai. Additionally, the iconic Ram Van Gaman Path, a spiritual route retracing Bhagwan Ram’s journey from Ayodhya to Chitrakoot and beyond, is under development at an estimated cost of Rs 11,000 crore. This sacred path, expected to be completed by 2026, will link key locations such as Shringverpur, where Bhagwan Ram met Nishad Raj. To honor this historical moment, a grand statue symbolizing their meeting has been installed, underscoring the enduring message of social harmony and brotherhood.
Since his first term in 2017, CM Yogi Adityanath has taken a personal interest in reviving Chitrakoot’s lost glory. Key initiatives include:
- Ramayan Conclave and Mela to showcase cultural heritage
- A Digital Ramayan Gallery and Water Screen Laser Show, valued at Rs 52 crore, have been created to enhance the cultural experience
- Familiarisation tours for tour operators to promote Chitrakoot’s tourism offerings globally
The UP government’s commitment to placing Chitrakoot on the global spiritual map also aligns with its larger strategy to develop religious tourism circuits, preserving ancient heritage while building world-class infrastructure.
From being a land feared for its dacoit domination to becoming a symbol of cultural revival and economic opportunity, Chitrakoot’s transformation is remarkable. The government’s efforts are not just about infrastructural development but about reviving the soul of Chitrakoot which is deeply rooted in Indian traditions and values. It is once again becoming the divine forest of joy that once sheltered Bhagwan Ram, Lakshman, and Sita – echoing the essence of “Jungle mein bhi Mangal.”
