In one of the biggest anti-narcotics operations in recent years, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police intercepted a massive drug consignment worth Rs 70 crore in the Amingaon area on Friday. The seizure included a huge cache of YaBa tablets and heroin, marking a significant blow to interstate drug trafficking networks.

Dual operations lead to major haul

Acting on precise intelligence inputs about the movement of narcotics from a neighboring state into Assam, the STF conducted two separate raids and recovered:

– 2,70,000 YaBa tablets (a potent methamphetamine-based drug)

– 40 soap boxes of heroin, weighing approximately 520 grams

In a parallel operation, the Guwahati City Police arrested a female drug smuggler, Sazida Begum, in the Saukuchi area. Authorities seized narcotics worth Rs 2 crore and Rs 1.50 lakh in cash from her possession.

STF’s swift action

The STF operation was led by Parthasarathi Mahanta, Chief of the Special Task Force, with crucial assistance from Additional SP (STF) Kalyan Pathak. Two drug couriers transporting the contraband were apprehended and are currently undergoing interrogation.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the seized drugs were en route to distribution hubs in mainland India, where their street value could have soared to Rs 70 crore.

Vow to crush drug networks

Speaking on the breakthrough, STF Chief Mahanta stated, “This operation underscores our zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking. We are working to dismantle the entire supply chain, from peddlers to kingpins.”

Police sources indicate that the narcotics were likely smuggled through Assam due to its strategic location bordering multiple states and international boundaries. The STF is now tracking the broader network behind this smuggling route.

Forensic teams are analysing the seized substances, while cyber cells are scanning digital footprints of the arrested individuals. Authorities suspect the involvement of an interstate syndicate and are coordinating with other law enforcement agencies to uncover further links.

This seizure adds to Assam’s intensified crackdown on drugs, following multiple high-profile busts in recent months. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the STF’s efforts, reiterating the government’s commitment to a “Drugs-Free Assam.”

The police have urged citizens to report any drug-related activities through helpline numbers, emphasizing community participation in combating the narcotics menace.

As the investigation unfolds, Assam Police remain on high alert to intercept further smuggling attempts, signaling tougher actions against drug cartels operating in the region.
