Maharaja Chhatrasal, known as “Bundelkhand Kesari,” is celebrated for his bravery in resisting Mughal rule and establishing an independent Hindu kingdom. His legacy is immortalised by the grand Ashtadhatu statue in Panna, which stands as a symbol of his indomitable spirit and the blessings of his guru, Prannath, who vowed that Chhatrasal would never lose a battle.
Maharaja Chhatrasal’s rise to prominence began with his courageous resistance against Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Born in 1649, Chhatrasal’s leadership and military acumen enabled him to carve out a self-sustained Hindu kingdom in Bundelkhand. His reign marked a proud era for the region, characterised by independence from Mughal dominance.
A fitting tribute to his valour is the Ashtadhatu statue of Chhatrasal, installed in Chhatrasal Park in Panna in 1951. The statue, crafted from a combination of iron, brass, and gold, portrays Chhatrasal mounted on a horse, symbolising his readiness for battle. Dr Rajendra Prasad, then President of India, unveiled the statue as a tribute to the king’s heroism. The park is situated in a spot historically significant to Chhatrasal, where he and his guru, Prannath, would strategise against Aurangzeb’s forces.
The Pranath Mandir within the park holds spiritual significance and is dedicated to Prannath, the guru who prophesied Chhatrasal’s invincibility in battle. His words, “Raja Chhatta, the earth beats in your rule, Jeette Ghoda Paag Rakhen Utte Tori Fateh Hue,” encapsulate the belief that wherever Chhatrasal’s horse tread, victory would follow.
Historian Suryabhan Singh Parmar highlights that the park, constructed by Maharaja Yadavendra Singh Ju Dev of Panna, is a symbol of Bundelkhand’s pride in its king’s legacy. The Ashtadhatu statue continues to inspire admiration for Maharaja Chhatrasal’s victories and his unyielding commitment to independence. Through his relentless efforts, Chhatrasal not only resisted Mughal tyranny but also ensured that the spirit of freedom lived on in Bundelkhand. His statue and the park stand as eternal reminders of his unwavering determination and the enduring legacy of his kingdom.
