From heritage to development: CM Yogi calls Mahakumbh the symbol of progress

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while addressing the Uttar Pradesh Assembly emphasized the significance of the recently concluded Mahakumbh, describing it as the culmination of the ‘Virasat to Vikas’ (Heritage to Development) journey that began with the inauguration of Kashi Vishwanath Dham in 2019 and reached new heights with the consecration of the Ram Mandir in 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Maha Kumbh, attended by a record-breaking 66 crore people over 45 days, showcased Uttar Pradesh’s ability to blend spiritual heritage with economic progress.

Highlighting the economic impact of the event, CM Yogi cited a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which estimated that the Maha Kumbh generated trade worth approximately Rs 3 lakh crore. This infusion of economic activity is expected to significantly strengthen the state’s economy. Additionally, he referenced Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran’s analysis, which found that the increased consumer spending during the event contributed to a 6.5 per cent rise in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The CM further provided a striking example of how the Kumbh boosted local livelihoods. A single family in Prayagraj, which owns 130 boats, reportedly made a total profit of Rs 30 crore over the 45-day festival. This translates to approximately Rs 50,000 in earnings per boat per day. Such economic success stories highlight the transformative impact of Maha Kumbh on small and medium-scale businesses, tourism, and the overall financial landscape of the state.

Law and Order: A Secure and Seamless Experience

In response to the opposition’s criticism regarding law and order, CM Yogi firmly asserted that not a single incident of loot, theft, or harassment of women was reported during the massive religious gathering. “Everyone who visited Kumbh returned happily,” he said, emphasizing that the smooth and peaceful execution of an event of such magnitude was proof of the state administration’s efficiency.

The Chief Minister also pointed out that the global media praised Mahakumbh for its flawless execution and meticulous planning. He stressed that the successful management of 66 crore pilgrims within a span of 45 days was a testament to the government’s commitment to security and the effective use of technology in crowd management.

CM Yogi noted that even opposition leaders who attended the Kumbh had no choice but to acknowledge the commendable efforts of the state government. He specifically mentioned Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who described the experience of witnessing the Mahakumbh as a “historic moment in one’s life.” Such bipartisan appreciation underscores the grand scale and impeccable organization of the event.

Lashing out at the opposition for attempting to paint the Mahakumbh in a negative light, Yogi Adityanath remarked that people have stopped responding to their baseless allegations. He warned that this growing disconnect between the opposition and the public should serve as an “alarm bell” in the lead-up to the 2027 assembly elections.

He further stated that attempts to undermine the significance of a cultural and spiritual event of such global prominence would only alienate the opposition from the electorate. “People have witnessed the impact of good governance, enjoying security, prosperity, and efficient administration. They are no longer influenced by negative propaganda,” he stated. CM Yogi emphasised that the Mahakumbh has demonstrated how religious faith can be seamlessly integrated with economic development. The influx of visitors boosted not only the local economy but also various industries, including hospitality, transport, and handicrafts. Small businesses, artisans, and service providers benefited immensely from the increased demand.

Moreover, the massive employment generation during the festival provided opportunities to thousands of workers, ensuring that the economic benefits reached every section of society. The event also showcased Uttar Pradesh as a global religious tourism destination, further enhancing its stature on the world stage.

The Chief Minister credited the success of Mahakumbh to meticulous planning, extensive use of technology, and major infrastructure upgrades. The state government implemented advanced crowd management techniques, AI-based surveillance, and real-time monitoring systems to ensure smooth operations.

Significant improvements in roads, sanitation, water supply, and transportation networks were undertaken in preparation for the event, leaving behind a legacy of improved infrastructure that will continue to benefit residents and future visitors. This holistic approach to event management and city development has set a benchmark for future large-scale gatherings in the country.

CM Yogi Adityanath’s address in the UP Assembly showed the Mahakumbh as not just a religious event, but a symbol of Uttar Pradesh’s journey towards economic and cultural resurgence. The seamless execution of the world’s largest religious gathering reinforced the state government’s capability to manage mega-events efficiently while ensuring safety, economic prosperity, and global recognition.

With the successful completion of the Mahakumbh, Uttar Pradesh has set a new precedent in event organization, infrastructure development, and economic progress. As the state moves forward, the model of integrating faith and economy, pioneered by the Yogi government, is likely to serve as an inspiration for future policy-making and development initiatives.
