Tamil Nadu: Six students vandalise murthis in Puducherry University, ABVP demands action against culprits

In a shocking incident on the early hours of March 12, six students of Puducherry University vandalised a Lord Vinayaka idol inside Kamban Hostel on the university premises. Their identities remain undisclosed. Sources report that the students entered the hostel and violently smashed the idol into pieces, allegedly while highly intoxicated.

ABVP Condemns the Attack

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has strongly condemned the incident and demanded that university officials take stringent action against those involved in the vandalism.

An Attack on Faith, An Attack on Us!

Last night, in an act of utter disrespect and intolerance the Vinayagar (Ganesh) idol at Kamban Hostel was brutally vandalized. This is not just an attack on an idol it is an attack on our faith, our culture and our values.

ABVP members, along with other hostel residents, have sent an email to all concerned university authorities, including the Chief Warden, Registrar, and Vice-Chancellor, urging swift action. Additionally, ABVP representatives met with the Dean of Students’ Welfare (DSW) to demand the immediate suspension of the culprits. In response, the DSW assured them that a committee would be formed to investigate the matter, and legal action would be taken against those responsible. The DSW also directed the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to retrieve the CCTV footage and forward it to the Registrar as soon as possible.

The rise of anti-Hindu JNU-style students seems imminent, as universities increasingly become breeding grounds for anti-national elements, Dravidian factions, and leftist ideologies—a growing concern.

Identity of the Culprits

According to sources, the identities of the students remain unknown as the OSD is currently on leave. Once he resumes duty, the CCTV footage will be retrieved, and the perpetrators will be identified. As of the time of reporting, no arrests have been made, and no case has been registered.

Hindu Munnani’s Victory in Madurai Temple Case

Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, following protests led by Hindu Munnani, the district administration has refrained from demolishing the Muthumariamman Temple in Madurai. Authorities had planned the demolition, claiming the temple encroached upon a water body. However, the united resistance of the local community forced officials—who arrived with police and revenue department teams—to abandon their plans, assuring residents that the temple would not be demolished.

High Court Orders Church Demolition

In another incident, on March 8, the Madras High Court ordered the demolition of a newly constructed church in Devar Malai, located along the Chengalpet National Highway bypass. The directive came in response to a petition filed by Hindu Munnani district secretary and social activist Sothupakkam Raja, who had lodged a complaint with the Chengalpet Tahsildar and District Magistrate, urging them to remove the encroachment.

The petitioner argued that the hill, rich in herbal flora and fauna, was being encroached upon by a Pentecostal denomination constructing the church, which would disrupt the environment and local tranquillity. After reviewing both sides of the case, the court ordered the demolition of the structure within 12 weeks.

String of Attacks on Hindu Temples

In December last year, the Kaliamman Mariamman Temple in Eriodu’s Vadugampadi Panchayat, Pannapatti, was broken into at night, with cash stolen from its donation box. Similarly, the lock of the nearby Madurai Veeran Temple was forcibly opened, and offerings were looted.

Reacting to the incident, Hindu Munnani stated: “Under DMK rule, only Hindu temples are being targeted and harassed! In Dindigul, three temples were robbed simultaneously! Is the HRCE not enough—now thieves too? The Tamil Nadu government must establish a special police force for temples. Since the DMK came to power, temple hundis have been looted across multiple districts. Temple idols have been desecrated. A dedicated force must be formed to safeguard temples, and strict action should be taken against those who steal from them.”

Arson Attack on Tenkasi Temple

On January 4, 2025, Tenkasi police arrested 31-year-old Anantha Balan from Kaezhaiyapillaiyoor after he allegedly poured petrol outside the Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple entrance and set it on fire. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. when Balan reportedly poured approximately 10 litres of petrol onto the granite floor before igniting it.

Police arrested him and suggested that he may have been experiencing mental health issues. However, Hindu activists highlight a concerning trend: between 2022 and 2024, there have been at least 18 incidents where individuals—either mentally unstable or intoxicated—have specifically targeted Hindu shrines.
