BJP Tamil Nadu launched a one-crore signature campaign on 5th March in support of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the three-language policy, emphasising that the third language should be an Indian language and not necessarily Hindi. The TN BJP plans to hold multiple public meetings across Tamil Nadu and conduct door-to-door visits to gather support and collect 1 crore. signatures from public.

While participating in it, the former Telangana Governor and BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan was stopped by police while attempting to carry forward the BJP’s signature campaign in support of the National Education Policy in Chennai.

Police kept her waiting for over three hours, disregarding her status as an ex-Governor. When Tamilisai Soundararajan attempted to gather signatures at Chennai’s MGR Nagar market, police intervened, leading to chaos.

TN BJP State Secretary Dr. S.G. Suryah was arrested for organising a signature campaign titled ‘Equal Education is Our Right’ in support of the three-language policy in state education. The campaign aims to bridge the educational gap between government school students and those in private matriculation and CBSE institutions—an idea strongly opposed by the ruling DMK.

Another signature collection campaign was held outside the Government Higher Secondary School in Karapakkam, near Sholinganallur, where BJP members discussed the three-language policy with students. Based on a complaint from the Chennai District Child Protection Welfare Committee, Kannagi Nagar police registered cases under four sections against Suryah, along with BJP councillor Leo Sundaram, V. Mohan Kumar, P. Kotteeswaran, and S. Anbarasan. They were released later that night following backlash from the BJP.

The same DMK government and its functionaries forced even elementary school students to oppose NEET. One MLA and his supporters instructed a government school teacher to advocate for abolishing NEET. They barged into schools and issued threats to enforce compliance.

Suryah was booked under the Juvenile Justice Act 2015, along with Sections 126(2) (intentionally preventing another person from moving in a direction) and 192 (intentionally provoking others to commit a riot) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He had previously been arrested and imprisoned for a post on X.

TN BJP chief K. Annamalai stated in a post on X: “The double role of the DMK, which has been making Tamil a commercial language for sixty years while allowing the trilingual policy only in private schools, is being exposed today. The public is beginning to see through the DMK’s theatrics and is showing massive support for the trilingual policy. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is reeling in fear. As a result, the democratic signature movement is being blocked and BJP functionaries are being arrested.”

Annamalai asserted that the BJP’s signature campaign promoting the three-language policy would transform the future of Tamil people. He announced that the BJP aims to collect one crore signatures by 31st May as part of the initiative.

He said, “The signature campaign advocating the three-language policy, organised by the BJP, will change the fate of every Tamil person. We have set a target to collect one crore signatures by 31st May,” Annamalai told reporters on 7 March.

Annamalai accused the DMK of turning Tamil into a commercial language for sixty years while permitting the trilingual policy only in private schools. He said people have now realised the “drama” of the DMK and CM Stalin and that there is massive support for the trilingual policy. He also exposed Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Poyyamozhi for attending a function at a CBSE school where three languages are taught. He pointed out the irony that Poyyamozhi’s son is studying French, calling it hypocrisy from these so-called Tamil chauvinists and Hindi haters. He also criticised their selective approach, saying they have no qualms promoting Urdu and Arabic in TN-funded schools while being Sanskrit-phobic.

In another post, Annamalai stated: “While TN CM spends his day spreading hallucinatory fears, @BJP4TamilNadu wishes to constructively engage with our people and break the disparity in education offered to government school students in TN.

As we speak, over 1 lakh people across TN have overwhelmingly supported the online signature campaign through http://puthiyakalvi.in. Our hardworking cadres and leaders have commenced a door-to-door campaign in every district today despite your efforts to stop them.

Having realised that opposition to the three-language policy has failed to garner support from the common people, Thiru @mkstalin has now shifted to the imaginary Hindi imposition narrative…”

A netizen questioned:
“If collecting signatures from students has a direct effect, then what about forcing students to help smuggle noon meal provisions, including rice and vegetables, and compelling them to clean toilets and sweep classrooms and school buildings?”

Like a parrot, CM Stalin has been accusing the Centre of not releasing funds meant for the school education department. He claims, “This is a deliberate attempt” and refutes allegations that his government is stubbornly opposing the three-language policy.

In a letter to his supporters, he wrote that the state has always followed a two-language formula. He accused the BJP government at the Centre of disrespecting state rights and unnecessarily imposing its will. He demanded data on the third language being taught in Hindi-speaking states and the number of educational institutions offering non-Hindi languages in those states. He also argued that past Union governments tried to impose Hindi but never withheld funds. He insisted that the Centre declare all 22 scheduled languages, including Tamil, as official languages of the country.
