NEW DELHI:  Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting in the national capital on Thursday, March 1, issuing decisive directives to restore permanent peace in Manipur. The directions include ensuring all roads remain open for public movement by March 8, 2025, expediting border fencing with Myanmar, and dismantling drug trafficking networks. The meeting underscored the government’s resolve to address the state’s security challenges under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Key Details

The meeting, attended by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Union Home Secretary, Intelligence Bureau Director, Deputy Chief of Army Staff, Eastern Command Army Commander, and senior officers from paramilitary forces and the Home Ministry, focused on stabilising the violence-affected state.

Directives by HM

1. Public Mobility: Shah mandated uninterrupted access to all roads across Manipur starting March 2025, warning of strict action against blockades. This aims to ease civilian movement and economic activity.

2. Border Security: Fencing at Manipur’s international border entry points will be accelerated to curb infiltration and illegal activities.

3. Drug Eradication: Shah called for a comprehensive crackdown on drug trafficking networks, stressing a “zero-tolerance” approach to achieve a “drug-free Manipur.”

Reiterating the Centre’s commitment, Shah emphasized, “The Modi government stands firmly with Manipur’s people. We will deploy all resources to ensure lasting peace and development.” Attendees discussed intelligence-sharing and coordinated operations among security agencies.

The meeting signals the administration’s proactive strategy to mitigate Manipur’s security concerns while prioritizing socio-economic growth. Observers view these measures as critical steps toward stabilizing the region amid prolonged ethnic tensions and unrest.
