Patna: In a significant development, police on Wednesday, February 13, arrested 7 individuals from Supaul district of Bihar. Those arrested were part of an idol theft gang responsible for theft of dozens of idols.
According to the report, the police nabbed Md Gaffar, Md Ishtehar, Md Shahadat, along with the key accused Md Hajrat alias Vijay when the accused were planning to carry out a theft in town police station limits of Supaul on Wednesday.
The other arrested individuals were identified as Md Kalam, Atabul and Ali Adam. The accused were apprehended after the police received a tip-off about their presence in the area.
The arrested accused were all said to be involved in over dozen cases of idol theft in Kosi and Seemanchal region of the state. Other than kingpin Hajarat, all the remaining accused were residents of other districts. The accused have reportedly confessed about their crime.
The police have also seized a country-made pistol along recovering tools used by the gang members to break locks during idols theft. Several rounds of live cartridges were also recovered from the possession of the accused.
The gang members reportedly used to conduct recces of the targeted place in the day while they preferred to steal the idols after dark. All the accused were recruited by key accused Hajrat, a history-sheeter who had said to be escaped from jail in the year 2023.
The police after nabbing the individuals later booked them all under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). The accused were subsequently sent to jail.
