In an attempt to further wipe out memories of the Liberation War, radical protesters in Bangladesh have vandalised and set on fire Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence in Dhaka during a live online address of his daughter and deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
There has been a sustained effort to erase memories of the Liberation War, and this incident suggests just that.
According to witnesses thousands of people rallied round the house at the capital’s Dhanmondi area, which was earlier turned into a memorial museum.
This incident comes in the wake of attempts being made to scrap the 1972 Constitution and replace it with one that leans towards the Sharia law.
They are yet to have the strength to destroy the national flag, the constitution and the independence that we earned, Hasina said in an apparent dig at caretaker Muhammad Yunus.
Since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh has descended into chaos. The attacks on Hindus have gone up multi fold. Yunus has kept a radical Islamic mob to run amock.
Bangladesh watchers say that since the ISI was welcomed by Dhaka all attempts to erase memories of the Liberation War are being made. Since Yunus took over, he has cozied up to Pakistan. He has opened the sea route to Pakistan and has been using this to send in arms ammunition and drugs.
Further the visa norms have been eased, and this helps Pakistan send terrorists using a legal route. A delegation of the ISI too visited Bangladesh, and it was decided to enhance defence cooperation. This is clearly aimed at creating security issues for Bharat.
However, for Pakistan the main agenda is to take control of Bangladesh and ensure that the humiliation they faced during the Liberation War is erased from history.
Pakistan has also been demanding that all events, memorials or literature that glorifies the independence if Bangladesh be erased. The Yunus government is said to have given into these demands. Yunus is also under pressure to hold elections early. Before that he wants to weaken the Awami League so that the BNP has a cake walk.
The experts say that if elections are held today and if they are free and fair then the Awami League would win the same easily. Aware of this Yunus and the BNP want to weaken the Awami League. Corruption cases have been filed and several Awami League leaders have been arrested.
