USAID’s Deep Ties to the Gandhi Family: Uncovering the financial web behind the Bharat Jodo Yatra

Recent investigations have uncovered troubling links between USAID, a major US foreign aid agency, and India's political scene, specifically through its connections to Rahul Gandhi's key advisor, Vijay Mahajan. This article explores how USAID's funding of certain organisations ties back to the Gandhi family, shedding light on potential foreign influence in India's political landscape

Recent revelations have shed light on a complex and controversial connection between USAID, a key global player in humanitarian aid, and India’s political landscape. Notably, this is directly linked to the Gandhi family, specifically Rahul Gandhi’s chief advisor, Vijay Mahajan, who has close ties with USAID-funded organisations. The question arises: could USAID’s involvement in these organisations be linked to efforts that influence India’s political landscape, including the Bharat Jodo Yatra?

What is USAID? A Brief Overview

USAID (United States Agency for International Development) is a government agency under the US State Department that claims to provide humanitarian assistance worldwide in the fields of health, education, and development. With an annual budget of over $50 billion, its goal is to support countries in need, ranging from disaster relief to empowering women and promoting democratic values.

However, recent revelations suggest that the agency’s true operations go beyond humanitarian work. Under the Trump administration, it was uncovered that USAID has been linked to covert activities, such as funding radical left-wing ideologies and even regime-change operations in various countries. These claims point to a more complex role of USAID—one that includes funding political movements and organisations rather than purely focusing on humanitarian aid.

USAID’s Involvement in India: The Funding Network

A detailed analysis of USAID’s financial activities in India, as highlighted by researcher @thehawkeyex, reveals significant funding directed toward Indian NGOs and educational institutes, particularly since 2021. The following key trends have emerged:

Funding to NGOs: One of the most notable recipients of USAID’s funds is Pradan, an NGO founded by Vijay Mahajan in 1982. For years, Pradan has received significant backing from USAID, with collaboration in key projects such as the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI), launched in 2012 with USAID, Oxford, and IFPRI.

Education Projects: USAID has also funded several educational initiatives in India, including those focused on promoting LGBTQ+ and Dalit rights. The agency’s activities in India have escalated under the Biden administration, especially since 2021, when USAID’s spending increased substantially, coinciding with growing international interest in India’s political shifts.

Pradan and Vijay Mahajan: The Gandhi Family Connection

At the heart of this controversy lies Vijay Mahajan, a crucial figure within India’s political and civil society circles. Mahajan, who founded Pradan, is not only a key member of India’s NGO ecosystem but also a central advisor to Rahul Gandhi, the scion of the Gandhi family. Here are some critical connections:

USAID’s Financial Support to Pradan: Over the years, Pradan has received significant funding from USAID, especially for initiatives aimed at empowering women in agriculture. The NGO’s collaborative work with PepsiCo and the West Bengal Women’s Empowerment Project also had USAID’s financial backing.

Vijay Mahajan’s Role with the Gandhi Family: Mahajan serves as the chief advisor to Rahul Gandhi and is the CEO of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, which has had its own history of political and financial controversy. He was also a key architect behind the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a political rally organised by Rahul Gandhi to mobilise opposition to the current government.

USAID’s Financial Support to Mahajan: In 2012, Vijay Mahajan received Rs 78 crore from USAID through the Millennium Innovation Fund. The scale of this financial support raises questions about the motivations behind these donations. With Mahajan’s direct link to the Gandhi family, one cannot ignore the possibility of political involvement.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra: A Funded Political Movement?

The question that arises from these connections is whether USAID, through Mahajan and Pradan, played a role in funding the Bharat Jodo Yatra—a massive political event aimed at challenging the current government in India. If USAID were funding organisations linked to Mahajan and Mahajan were directly involved in Rahul Gandhi’s political strategies, could there be a hidden agenda behind this support?

Given that Soros and the Biden administration have expressed open support for political shifts in India, could USAID’s funding of Mahajan and his associated NGOs be part of a larger scheme to influence Indian politics? The correlation between USAID’s support and Mahajan’s role in Gandhi’s political campaigns makes it impossible to dismiss these concerns.

Connections with Left-Wing Media and International Organisations

Another layer of this puzzle is the involvement of organisations funded by USAID that have directly supported left-leaning causes. For instance, Pratham Education, which has also been funded by USAID, has deep ties to Madhav Chavan, who is directly connected to Sonia Gandhi. Chavan’s association with the Indian National Congress raises further questions about the political influence these organisations wield.

Furthermore, OCCRP (Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project), often used by Rahul Gandhi’s supporters to target the Modi government, is another entity funded by USAID.

The Call for Transparency: Investigating USAID’s Role in India

Given the recent findings and the growing suspicion surrounding USAID’s involvement in India’s political landscape, there is a strong case for an independent investigation into the financial and political activities of USAID in India. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) should consider auditing all entities that have received USAID funding over the past decade, with a particular focus on their connections to the Gandhi family and other political opposition groups.

Call to Action

In light of these findings, it is crucial for the Indian government to:
– Investigate USAID’s funding activities in India, particularly its connections to NGOs like Pradan and Pratham.
– Audit the flow of foreign funds to political organisations that are linked to opposition parties.
– Protect India’s political autonomy by ensuring that foreign entities do not use humanitarian aid as a cover for covert political operations. This investigation will help clarify the extent of foreign influence in India’s political processes and safeguard the country’s democratic integrity.
