Dr Mark S G Dyczkowski, born in London in 1951 to a Polish father and Italian mother, emerged as a preeminent scholar and practitioner in the realms of Sanatan Dharma, Kashmiri Shaivism, and Tantra. A great man who followed the spiritual path in search of the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, his extensive contributions have significantly enriched the understanding and appreciation of these profound traditions.

Academic and Spiritual Journey

Dr Dyczkowski’s academic pursuit began with a Bachelor’s degree in Indian Philosophy from Banaras Hindu University, followed by a Ph.D. from Oxford University, where he specialised in Kashmiri Shaivism under the mentorship of Professor Alexis Sanderson. In 1976, he received initiation from the esteemed Swami Laksmanjoo, deepening his engagement with the spiritual practices of the tradition.

Contributions to Kashmiri Shaivism and Tantra

Over nearly five decades, Dr Dyczkowski has dedicated himself to the study and dissemination of Kashmiri Shaivism and Tantra. His scholarship is distinguished by the translation and commentary of pivotal texts, most notably the Tantrāloka by Abhinavagupta. This monumental work, completed after 45 years of rigorous study, spans eleven volumes and includes the thirty-seven chapters of the Tantrāloka, accompanied by the commentary of Jayaratha.

Additionally, Dr Dyczkowski has translated the first chapter of the Tantrāloka, along with Jayaratha’s commentary, providing extensive explanatory notes to guide readers through the intricate philosophies of the text.

Preservation and Study of Shaiva Manuscripts

Dr Dyczkowski’s role as the Academic Advisor to the Muktabodha Digital Library Project underscores his commitment to preserving Śaiva manuscripts. He oversees a team in Varanasi dedicated to digitising texts from the Śaiva Agama and Tantra traditions, ensuring their accessibility for future scholars and practitioners.

Exploration of Bharatiya Culture and Hindu Dharma

Beyond textual scholarship, Dr Dyczkowski has immersed himself in the broader spectrum of Bharatiya culture. An accomplished sitarist, he has collected over 1,500 compositions, reflecting his deep engagement with Indian classical music. His lectures and writings offer insights into the intricate philosophies of Hinduism, making them accessible to a global audience.

Legacy and Ongoing Work

Dr Dyczkowski’s contributions have been instrumental in reviving interest in Kashmiri Shaivism and Tantra. His translations and commentaries serve as essential resources for scholars and practitioners alike. Through his efforts in manuscript preservation and cultural exploration, he continues to illuminate the rich tapestry of Sanatan Dharma, ensuring its wisdom endures for generations to come.
