In yet another disturbing incident, a traffic police constable in Chennai sexually assaulted a teenage girl from Rajasthan when she asked for directions to her friend’s house. This comes amid growing concerns about the safety of women and children in Tamil Nadu, where incidents like these have become all too frequent.

From the horrific rape of an Anna University student to the assault of three minors in a secluded building by their peers and even a troubling incident where two SUVs bearing DMK flags chased a car carrying women on ECR Road, these events serve as stark reminders of how unsafe Chennai has become for women.

Recently, a 13-year-old Rajasthan girl who came out of her home to meet a friend slept on a platform near a church on January 25.  Traffic policeman Raman found her and asked why she was sleeping alone here.  According to reports,   She told the policeman that his friend was not home on January 25 night. As she refused to return home, the woman asked her to stay at a church in Mylapore overnight and come the next morning.

After hearing her, he promised to help, but the girl refused to unite with her mother. Then he took her to Foreshore Estate police station. On the way, he took her to a police booth where he molested her. He then allowed her to go.  When she came and learnt about the marriage with a relative’s son.   She again came to her friend’s home. The mother of the boy in Mandaveli sent both her son and the girl to her relative’s house in Cuddalore to get them married. They stayed there for three days before a police team from Chennai traced her on her mother’s petition.

Based on the complaint, Mylapore police arrested 16 16-year-old boy and his mother under the Posco Act. When the girl was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), she narrated the molestation of a traffic policeman.  Based on the girl’s complaint, the traffic constable Raman was arrested under the same act.

A final-year college student was abducted in a car near Rasipuram in the Namakkal district a couple of days ago. When she was returning home after attending college on a bus, she got down at the Singalapuram bus stop; three youths who were waiting there forcibly pushed her into a car and rode away.  Based on the police complaint by her parents, police registered a case.  They are trying to find out through Cell phone call records and CCTV footage.  Police tracked and blocked the car at a checkpoint in Hosur and rescued the girl. The trio was arrested.  They are identified as Tamilselvan, Karthik and Tamizh Pandian, all residents of Singalapuram. She was rescued within 12 hours of her abduction.

Tamil Nadu BJP vice president Narayanan Tirupathi, taking to X page, says, “I strongly condemn the Chennai Police for releasing the confession statement of the accused in the ECR car issue where it was seen that a few men were threatening women in a car.  If the police can release these videos before the trial starts, what is the need for Courts and Honourable Judges? Is this not a serious violation? The police are trying to become Judges.  Police are unaware that the confession of the accused is not admissible in the court of law? Despite knowing, if the same has been released to the media, then it is clear that the police are desperately acting at the behest of the ruling party. In order to protect the ruling party’s image as the car in which the accused were driving had the flag of  @arivalayam  party,  the police has indulged in this act of releasing the video of the confession of the accused saying he doesn’t belong to the ruling party”.

Condemning the same, he says, “This is highly atrocious and fascist mentality of the Dravida model DMK.  Will the police dare to release these videos, even the confession of the accused Gnanasekaran, who was arrested in the Anna University issue?  Is it not a fact that if the confession of Sadiq Basha (28/01/2011 & 21/02/2011) accused in the 2G case, had been released to the media then, the past and the present rulers in DMK  would have been exposed and that would have been the end of their political career? The high handedness & haste in handling this case clearly shows that the  @arivalayam  has failed once again in controlling the law and order and the police doesn’t act as per law but as per the whims and fancies of the ruling party”.

On police saying the accused used the DMK flag on the bonnet to pass toll gates and are AIADMK members, BJP social media wing functionary Karthik Gopinath says, “If only they had an iota of shame! This is a standard trend since 2021!”

It is not clear how DMK flag-fitted cars are allowed in Toll gates.

Police arrested a 53-year physical education teacher, Arivalagan, of Greater Chennai Corporation School at Mahakavi Bharathiyar Nagar, on charges of sexually harassing a female colleague on January 26.  He asked the woman to arrange things for Republic Day at PETroom, and after latching the door, he sexually abused her. However, the woman pushed him aside and managed to come out and shout for help.  The PET was booked under BNS, besides the provisions of the Tamil Nadu woman harassment (Prevention Act).

In another incident, 27-year-old college professor Celia Caroline eloped with a student.  When his wife did not return home on January 24, her husband, John Jebaraj, preferred a missing person complaint.   The couple had a 3-year-old boy.  Initial probe revealed that she was in love with a 20-year-old B.Com third-year student. They moved out of the city to get married.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi said Chennai was not safe for women and that steps should be taken to make citizens safe for them. While addressing the 93rd annual All India Women’s conference in Chennai recently said, “When I interacted with the girls, who won gold medals, to know their aspirations, their reply was ( with tears) that their parents did not think of Chennai was safe for them”.
