Imphal: The Congress party is supporting the Kuki organizations’ call for Manipur’s Kukis to have their own administration like a union territory. Congress party is fueling the separate state demand of the Kuki organisations in Manipur, alleged the BJP Manipur unit. The BJP state unit also claimed that both Congress and Kuki organisations were conspiring to impose the president’s rule in the state experiencing unrest. According to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur, the Congress party has connections to Kuki organisations and supports similar demands, such as imposing President’s Rule in the state and a separate administration for Kukis rather than solving the burning issues of the state. The sole motive of the Congress party was to gain political mileage out of the tense situation in the state.

K. Sharatkumar, the general secretary of the state BJP, told reporters that the World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council had written to Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, the leaders of the Congress. Sharatkumar asserted that the letter, which called on the Congress to draft a Kuki Political Solution Bill to establish a distinct Union Territory for the Kuki-Zo people, was evidence of the Congress’s ties to Kuki organizations. The BJP spokesperson also claimed that the Congress is supporting the demands of the Kuki groups, which include the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to Sharatkumar, the state has been calling for President’s Rule by both Congress and Kuki organisations.

Furthermore, in order to secure the party’s support for a distinct political administration for the Kuki people, the BJP accused the Kuki Inpi Manipur of giving Kuki voters instructions to vote for Congress candidates in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP also blamed Kuki separatist organizations, particularly those operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) accord, for the violence that has been going on in Manipur since May 3, 2023, alleging that they have worked with Congress to sway the electoral process. In order to imply that foreigners were involved in the violence, Sharatkumar also used widely shared videos of Kuki National Army members brandishing advanced weapons.
