Deep State’s Agenda to Divide India: Social media’s role in inciting regional divisions in Tamil Nadu and Bihar

India, built on unity in diversity, now faces a dangerous threat from social media campaigns designed to stoke regionalism and secessionist sentiments. These divisive narratives, allegedly fueled by "Deep State" operations, risk tearing apart the nation's social fabric and must be urgently addressed

India, a country built on the foundations of unity in diversity, is now facing an insidious threat that aims to sow division and discord among its people. Behind the curtain of social media platforms and OTT networks, there seems to be a well-coordinated campaign, allegedly fueled by what can be described as a “Deep State” operation, designed to stoke secessionist sentiments and fracture the nation. Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and the ongoing Maharashtra-Karnataka conflicts are emerging as critical hotspots for this agenda. The time has come for the Indian government to take firm action against these platforms and protect its people from the corrosive influence of hate and divisiveness.

Rise of Divisive Social Media Campaigns

In recent years, social media has become a powerful tool for political, social, and cultural influence. While platforms like Twitter (now X), Facebook, and Instagram have been instrumental in fostering connection and communication, they have also emerged as breeding grounds for hate speech, propaganda, and divisive narratives. What is more concerning is the apparent rise of organised social media farms, often referred to as “Deep State accounts,” designed to impersonate various ethnic, religious, or regional groups in India.

These account farms appear to be working towards a specific agenda — one that involves dividing India along state, ethnic, and linguistic lines. The operation is said to be focused on programming India’s youth into adopting secessionist ideologies, tapping into their sense of identity, and amplifying regional grievances to the point where the very idea of national unity becomes untenable.

A look at the current landscape suggests that states like Tamil Nadu and Bihar are being used as testing grounds for this divisive strategy. The creation of fake accounts that impersonate Tamil or Bihari voices is designed to incite anger and resentment against the central government. Similarly, ongoing tensions between Maharashtra and Karnataka, exacerbated by territorial disputes, align with the same operational objectives. In these cases, misinformation and malicious narratives are deliberately pushed to create fractures in inter-state relations, leveraging social media to heighten existing differences and fan the flames of discord.

Social Media Platforms: Enabling Hate and Divisiveness

What is most alarming is the complicity of social media giants like Meta (Facebook, Instagram) and X in this operation. The very platforms that are supposed to provide space for healthy discourse are now being weaponised to spread hate, incite violence, and perpetuate falsehoods. Many users who report hate speech or divisive content on these platforms receive responses such as, “Sorry, this doesn’t go against our community standards,” even when the content is clearly offensive or inflammatory. For example, vulgar and obscene remarks targeting religious figures, deities, or even entire communities are frequently allowed to remain online, while those reporting them are met with indifference or denial.

Such practices not only undermine the integrity of these platforms but also expose the vulnerabilities of a sovereign nation like India to external manipulation. The deep state’s ability to exploit these platforms without meaningful intervention signals a grave concern about the power these tech giants wield over national security and societal harmony.

The platform’s refusal to take down content that is harmful or divisive raises an even more concerning issue: if social media companies can avoid accountability within a country, what is to stop them from promoting agendas that undermine national unity? This is a matter of great urgency, as unchecked hate speech can quickly spiral into widespread unrest, violence, and even attempts to destabilise the very fabric of a democratic society.

A Call for Action: Proactive Measures for Social Media Regulation

In light of the growing threat posed by divisive social media campaigns, it is essential that the Indian government take decisive steps to protect its citizens and maintain national unity. The first step in this direction is to ensure that social media platforms are held accountable for the content they host and promote.

Compulsory Reporting to Government Databases

Citizens should have the ability to report harmful content, such as hate speech, divisive rhetoric, and calls for violence, to social media platforms. However, these reports should also be automatically submitted to a government database for analysis. This will help track and monitor trends in online hate speech, allowing authorities to respond proactively to emerging threats and divide-and-conquer tactics.

Appeal Mechanism to Government Authorities

Social media platforms should be legally required to provide an option for users to appeal to content that is deemed harmful or divisive. If platforms fail to act on such content within a reasonable timeframe, users should be able to escalate the issue to a government-run department responsible for social media oversight. This step ensures transparency and accountability, and it will prevent platforms from turning a blind eye to content that clearly violates community standards.

Stronger Content Moderation Policies

Platforms like Meta, X, and others must be mandated to implement stricter content moderation policies in India. These policies should prioritise the removal of content that promotes hate speech, incites violence, or undermines national unity. Platforms should be required to take immediate action against content that promotes secessionist ideologies, particularly when it comes to inflammatory posts regarding specific ethnic, linguistic, or regional groups.

Legal Consequences for Non-compliance

Social media companies that fail to adhere to these regulations should face heavy penalties or even a temporary ban from operating in India. There must be clear legal repercussions for companies that allow the spread of hate speech or divisive content, especially when they ignore or dismiss user complaints.

India is at a crossroads. The threat of divisive social media campaigns, aimed at inflaming regional tensions and inciting secessionist sentiments, is very real. If left unchecked, these operations could result in lasting harm to the unity and integrity of the nation. It is incumbent upon the Indian government to take swift and firm action to curb the influence of these dangerous narratives. By holding social media platforms accountable and ensuring that there are legal safeguards against the spread of divisive content, India can protect its most valuable asset: its unity.
