On the night of Tuesday, December 11, a harrowing tale of courage and desperation unfolded as a 17-year-old Hindu girl from Bangladesh risked everything to escape persecution by Islamic fundamentalists in her home country. Fearing for her life and the safety of her family, the minor girl embarked on a perilous journey, crossing the heavily guarded Bangladesh-India border on foot under the cover of darkness. Her journey culminated in the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, where she was apprehended by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel near the Fatehpur border outpost in Chopra block.
The girl’s plight underscores the relentless threats faced by minority communities in Bangladesh. According to initial reports, her family are devout followers of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), a religious minority group that has frequently been targeted by Islamic elements in the region. Her relatives in Jalpaiguri informed authorities that her family had been receiving death threats from Islamic groups.
The threats extended specifically to the girl, warning that she would be kidnapped, prompting her daring attempt to seek refuge in India.
BSF officials recounted the extraordinary measures the girl undertook to evade detection on the Bangladeshi side of the border. “She somehow managed to slip past the border guards and made her way to our side. Her actions speak of sheer desperation and a will to survive,” a BSF officer stated.
Upon spotting her near the border, BSF personnel conducted a preliminary inquiry and subsequently handed her over to the state police at the Chopra police station.
The minor girl is now in the custody of the Bengal police and is expected to be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board. Her immediate safety and future remain priorities, with legal and humanitarian efforts underway.
Meanwhile, her relatives in Jalpaiguri have stepped forward, indicating their willingness to provide her shelter and support.
