Top leaders from royal families across the country condemn Rahul Gandhi for his article

Prominent leaders from royal families across India have voiced strong condemnation of Rahul Gandhi following the publication of his recent article. These leaders expressed concerns that Gandhi's statements misrepresent historical legacies and undermine the contributions of princely states and royal families to India's heritage

In Rahul Gandhi’s recent opinion piece in an editorial to Indian Express, he presents a sweeping critique of what he perceives as monopolistic tendencies in India’s business environment, calling for a shift towards fairness and freedom. However, his argument appears to be an oversimplified portrayal of complex economic dynamics, lacking nuance and clear evidence to support the accusations of “match-fixing” between big businesses and the government. The piece reads more like a political diatribe aimed at the ruling establishment rather than a well-reasoned analysis of the challenges facing India’s economy.

RaGa’s rhetoric not only falls short on presenting a constructive roadmap for economic reform, leaving readers with more questions than answers about his vision for a fairer business climate, but the article attempted to draw parallels between the current political climate and historical royal practices, which many found offensive and misleading. Leaders from royal families, who have made significant contributions to public welfare, heritage preservation, and nation-building, have condemned RaGa’s piece as a distortion of historical facts and an unwarranted attack on their legacy.

Among those who spoke out was Diya Kumari of Jaipur, who took to social media to express her disappointment. In her post on X, she tweeted, “Rahul Gandhi’s misguided comments are a direct insult to the royal families who have tirelessly worked for the nation’s progress. Our legacy is one of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism—not the divisiveness that Rahul attempts to portray.” Diya Kumari, Deputy CM of Rajasthan, emphasised the need to recognize the real contributions of royal families to India’s freedom struggle and post-independence development. She also highlighted how royal families have actively participated in various social and cultural initiatives, working alongside the people to uplift their regions. This dedication, she argued, cannot be easily dismissed by uninformed political commentary.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, Member of Parliament and Union Minister of Communications and a descendant of the former royal family of Gwalior, also criticized Gandhi’s remarks. He called the article a “cheap attempt to vilify those whose history Rahul Gandhi neither understands nor respects.” Scindia noted that Gandhi’s repeated efforts to rewrite historical narratives for political gain undermine the contributions of families who fought for the country and supported national integration. He emphasised that the Gwalior family played a significant role in India’s independence movement and contributed to ensuring a unified nation. Scindia also mentioned that his family has been deeply involved in fostering communal harmony and upholding ideals of unity and progress.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, representing the royal family of Mysore, similarly called Gandhi’s portrayal of royals “unfortunate and factually incorrect.” Yaduveer pointed out the longstanding tradition of the Mysore family in supporting democratic values and societal progress. He emphasised his family’s commitment to regional development and welfare, regardless of political affiliations. Yaduveer added that the Mysore royals were instrumental in laying the foundation for modern education and infrastructure in Karnataka, which has benefited countless people over generations. He stressed that the royal family has always worked with a sense of responsibility toward their subjects, ensuring that progress and prosperity reached all sections of society.

Vishvaraj Singh Mewar, from the royal lineage of Mewar—a family celebrated for its unwavering dedication to sovereignty and freedom—responded with indignation. In his social media statement, Vishvaraj highlighted how Rahul Gandhi’s simplistic and biased narrative fails to do justice to the sacrifices made by figures like Maharana Pratap, who fought valiantly against foreign rule. He called for a greater appreciation of the values of patriotism, sacrifice, and unity that have always defined his family’s ethos. Vishvaraj also emphasized that the Mewar family’s contributions extended beyond the battlefield, with a strong focus on cultural preservation and promoting the rich heritage of Rajasthan. He noted that such baseless accusations not only disrespect their ancestors but also undermine the spirit of patriotism that continues to inspire millions.

Gayatri Raje Puar of Dewas also voiced her concern, referring the article as “ill-informed” and aimed at creating a false narrative about India’s royal heritage. She stated, “The royal families of India have always stood for the integrity of our country. Trying to malign us for political gains is irresponsible and a disservice to the younger generation, who deserve to know the true history of our land.” Gayatri Raje explained that the royal families have consistently worked toward maintaining social harmony and contributing to regional welfare through philanthropic activities. She highlighted various initiatives her family has undertaken, particularly in women’s education and healthcare, which have had a significant positive impact.

Other prominent voices, such as Chaitanya Raj Singh Bhati of Jodhpur, Vikramaditya Singh of J&K, and Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar of Udaipur, added their condemnation of Gandhi’s piece. Chaitanya Raj Singh Bhati tweeted, “It is regrettable that a political leader resorts to defaming those who played a crucial role in shaping modern India.” He pointed out that royal families willingly integrated with the Indian Union, giving up personal privileges for the greater good of the nation. Vikramaditya Singh emphasised that such statements reflect a lack of understanding of India’s diverse history and the roles that various princely states played in integrating with the Union of India. He also highlighted his family’s ongoing efforts to promote regional development and support marginalized communities in J&K.

Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, in a heartfelt post, underscored that “the contributions of royal families cannot be dismissed by writing baseless articles.” He highlighted the tireless work carried out by many of these former royal families in areas like education, healthcare, and heritage conservation—work that speaks louder than empty political rhetoric. Lakshyaraj elaborated on the numerous projects undertaken by the Mewar family, including the restoration of historical monuments and the promotion of tourism, which has provided livelihoods to thousands in the region. He asserted that the true measure of their legacy lies in their ongoing commitment to preserving the cultural and historical fabric of India.

Rahul Gandhi’s article seems to have backfired, uniting royal families across regions and party lines in their condemnation. These reactions illustrate a broader frustration within the Congress party’s attempts to score political points by distorting historical facts and maligning those who have played an integral role in India’s development. The backlash from the royal families serves as a reminder that history cannot be rewritten for political convenience and that their contributions to India’s unity and progress are undeniable.

The criticism is not just about defending their heritage but also about advocating for responsible political discourse—one that respects the diversity of India’s past and acknowledges the sacrifices of those who helped shape the country. The royals have made it clear that attempts to rewrite history and vilify their ancestors will not go unanswered. They reiterated their commitment to serving the nation and preserving its rich heritage, standing as a testament to the values of unity, integrity, and progress that have always defined their legacy. This episode highlights the importance of understanding and acknowledging the multifaceted history of India, where contributions from all sections of society have collectively shaped the nation we see today.

Should Rahul Gandhi not be more careful with his words? Instead of making divisive statements that threaten to tear apart the peaceful fabric of Bharat, perhaps he could try a bit of prudence. As a political leader, isn’t it his job to foster unity and harmony, rather than spewing rhetoric that disrespects the sacrifices and contributions of others? If only he could be a bit more considerate and respectful of India’s rich heritage, maybe—just maybe—he could actually help advance the nation’s progress instead of holding it back.
