RAIPUR: Over half a dozen people have been taken into custody after local activists informed the police about a religious gathering aimed allegedly at enticing people to change their religion. As many as seven people including a few female members of the group have been taken into custody after a major row erupted over the said gathering on Sunday, November 3.
The incident pertains to Mitthumuda area under Jutmal police station limits of Raigarh district, where a group of people had called a religious meeting (prayer ceremony) on Sunday morning aimed allegedly at luring them into conversion. The meeting was organized at a private premise in which over a dozen people mostly women of the locality were invited.
The news of the said gathering however somehow reached the Hindu activists of the area who subsequently informed the police about the meeting by arriving on the spot. Upon receiving the information, a police team swiftly reached the spot and detained a number of individuals along seizing a few materials from the spot.
According to the reports, the speakers at the event were allegedly showcasing the Hindu god/goddess in bad light, terming them powerless while hailing the powers of god Jesus Christ at the same time. Further, the police team was also misled about the number of participants attending the meeting initially, though the police later entered the premises and found over a dozen people inside.
“We got some information about the said meeting and when we reached the spot, speaker’s voice from inside the premise could be heard quite clearly outside, they were praising lord Ishu and terming the Hindu god/goddess powerless, they were further enticing the attendees to join them,” said one of the local activist while interacting with the media.
Following the disclosure, the Hindu activists of the area resorted to sloganeering, demanding strict action against those promoting conversion through fallacy and enticement. The incident has also prompted reaction from local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders who have alleged that such programs are being carried out in the area and the police administration is well aware of it.
It is noteworthy that incident linked with promotion of illegal conversion have been keep coming to the fore from separate corners of the state on regular basis, attracting outrage among the local Hindu community and the activists associated with countering such conversion related activities.

In a similar case reported from Raigarh itself, police had detained an individual from Darogapara area on October 14. The said individual was allegedly enticing the local residents for conversion when he was caught up red handed.
The detained person had called a religious praying ceremony (Prarthana Sabha) in Yadav Gali of the Darogapara area, however the information about the said gathering reached the local Hindu activists, who caught him red handed by arriving on the spot. Two of the associates of the youth, however somehow managed to flee the scene.

Notably, the state of Chhattisgarh has a significant population of the tribal community, a community affected heavily by the menace of illegal conversion.
