Guwahati: With the start of “Bhasha Gaurav Saptah” on November 3, Assam began a historic celebration of its linguistic legacy, commemorating the recent designation of Assamese as a classical language. On social media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared, “This week, people from various linguistic groups will celebrate their languages and commit themselves to preserving it,” kicking off the celebrations on social media.

Following the central government’s declaration of the Assamese language as a classical language, PM Narendra Modi praised the celebration and called it a historic attempt to increase the happiness of the Assamese people. Additionally, he expects that the week-long celebration programs will strengthen ties between people and the Assamese language and culture. Assamese living outside the state are also encouraged to participate in Language Pride Week by the PM. The event, which lasts until November 9, marks an important turning point in Assamese culture. State ministers will preside over inaugural events in each district, highlighting the value of regional and Assamese languages in the state’s cultural landscape.

The celebration’s online and offline events, as well as the publication of a special booklet detailing the historical significance of the Assamese language from the fourth century, are its main attractions. The program’s goal is to highlight the literary works and scholarly achievements that have enhanced the language over the ages. The effort started when Chief Minister Sarma first announced plans for the Bhasha Gaurav Saptah on October 16. The ceremony aims to promote harmony among Assamese linguistic communities while raising awareness of the classical status. To demonstrate the state’s dedication to maintaining its linguistic diversity, local cultural organisations and educational institutions are anticipated to take part in a number of events throughout the week.
