Continuing its crackdown on extremist elements, the Manipur police has arrested eight members of the banned outfit, United Liberation Front of Manipur (Pambel). The police also seized arms and ammunition from their possession at the Thoubal district, an official statement read.

The arrested persons were threatening people and also restraining the land demarcation process n Tubal district, the police also said. The security agencies seized three4 AK-47 rifles, two AK-56 rifles, one M-16, one 9mm pistol, 147 AK 47 live round ammunition, 2 M-16 live round ammunition, 25 of 9 mm live round ammunition, sixteen mobile handsets and one SUV.

This development comes a day after a hand grenade was found at the gates of the GP Women’s College, located less than 100 metres from the Raj Bhavan. While the hand grenade was recovered in the nick of time, it caused a considerable amount of panic considering the location it was placed at.

On 28.10.2024, Manipur Police arrested 08 (eight) members of UNLF (P) who were indulging in illegal activities by threatening with illegal sophisticated arms and restraining legal land demarcation process at Thoubal District. They were identified as:

In the last couple of days there have been growing threats by extremists who have warned that the educational institutions in Manipur would be blown up.

On October 28, the police apprehended one cadre of the People’s Liberation Army from the Top Leirak Machin area in Imphal West on Mondau. The person arrested was involved in. Huge extortion racket in the Imphal area, the police said.

Further the police also arrested three militants belonging to different valley-based outfits on charges of extortion. The police said one cadre each of the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), Kangleipak Communist Party (Noyon) and Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) were arrested from Manipur’s Imphal West and Bishnupur districts.

These developments come in the wake of the Intelligence agencies warning that external elements are at work to ensure that the violence does not die down. Violent incidents are being reported nearly every day, despite the intervention by the Centre, which had held talks with both the leaders from the Meitei and Kuki communities.

The Intelligence reports relating to Manipur and the external interference led to search operations being conducted. Combined operations were conducted by the security forces comprising the Army, Assam Rifles, Central Reserver Police Force, Border Security Force in both the fringe and vulnerable areas of both hull and valley districts.

The operations were carried out to nab extremist elements and the armed cadres of various organisations. These operations have not only led to arrests, but also seizure of arms and ammunition. The arrested cadres are being investigated to ascertain the role that they have been playing in furthering the violence in Manipur. It is also being ascertained if there is a foreign hand at play which is funding and aiding this movement.

Further the Intelligence Bureau has been picking up inputs that not only suggest a foreign hand in the violence but an effort that is being made to ensure that the violence spreads to the rest of the North Eastern states. There is a clear sign that these elements want the whole of North East to burn in a bid to destabilise their
region. The government has worked very hard to make North East peaceful.

Moreover there have been scores of developmental projects that have been undertaken in the region. These elements want to ruin that and hence the violence is continuing unabated the Intelligence Bureau also said in its report.
