Maoists kill Congress leader in Bijapur

In a related development, cadres of the banned Maoist outfit have killed a local congress leader in Usur block of Bijapur district, suggest media reports.

The deceased has been identified as Tirupati Bhandari, a former vice village head (upsarpanch). Bhandari was reportedly associated with the Congress party.

The incident took place when Bhandari had arrived at a shop in Usur on Saturday evening where the Maoists attacked him with sharp edged weapon, leading to his death. More details about the incident is still awaited.

It is noteworthy that this is not the first time that the extremists have killed a political representative of the area and the Maoists had also killed the then BJP’s Usur block president Neelkanth in February last year. Notably, the tribal dominated interior areas of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division has a strong presence of outlawed CPI (Maoist).
