In an event that beautifully intertwined age-old Vedic traditions with modern education, the students of Sri Vidyaranya Avasa Vidyalayam (Sishu Mandir) in Bandlaguda Jagir, Hyderabad, performed the sacred ritual of Pada Pooja, a ceremony where children wash their parents’ feet as a gesture of profound gratitude and respect.

The event, held on September 28, within the serene premises of Sarada Dham and hosted by the Sri Saraswati Vidyapeetam—a 50-year-old institution affiliated with Vidya Bharati Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Sansthan—was a powerful testament to the school’s commitment to cultural ethos, character development, and holistic education.

The students of SVAV, as it is fondly called, illustrated their devotion to their parents, acknowledging them as the true guiding forces in their lives. Following the ancient sayings of “Mathru Devo Bhava; Pithru Devo Bhava; Acharya Devo Bhava,” the young learners performed the Pada Pooja with sincere reverence, washing their parents’ feet, applying sandalwood paste and kumkum, and offering flowers and akshatas before receiving their blessings.

The Essence of Pada Pooja

Rooted in Vedic history, the ritual of Pada Pooja serves as a profound reminder of parental sacrifices. “Our parents are our visible gods,” shared an SVAV teacher. “They provide for us, protect us, and shape our futures. This ceremony is a small gesture of gratitude for the love and support they unconditionally offer.” SVAV Principal Bikshapathi emphasized that this tradition teaches students the importance of humility and respect for those who have given them everything they need—blood, food, head, and wealth.

For many students, the experience was transformative. “Washing my parents’ feet reminded me of their selfless sacrifices and how much they mean to me,” shared a tenth-grade student. “It was humbling and inspiring.”

Esteemed Guests and Community Involvement

The event was graced by Hon’ble Minister of Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay and prominent dignitaries from Vidya Bharati, including Vidya Bharati Dakshin Madhya Kshetra Sangathan Mantri Lingam Sudhakar Reddy, Telangana State President Tirupati Rao, Secretary Mukkala Sitaramulu, and Organizing Secretary Srinivasa Rao. The dignitaries commended the school’s efforts to instill such values and appreciated the parents for their support. SVAV President Arjun Goud led the ceremony by performing Pada Pooja on the dais, with School Secretary Boddu Srinivasa Rao coordinating the event alongside Principal Bikshapathi, Academic Coordinator Aruna, and the entire teaching staff.

A Holistic Approach to Education

Sri Vidyaranya Avasa Vidyalayam, known for its commitment to both character building and academic excellence, stands as a beacon of traditional Bharatiya values in a modern educational landscape. “We aim not only to educate minds but to shape hearts,” explained Principal Bikshapathi. “By incorporating rituals like Pada Pooja, we help our students develop a sense of duty, gratitude, and love for their families—a foundation that complements academic success.”

This unique initiative underscores the role of SVAV in fostering a new generation of respectful, responsible, and culturally rooted individuals. The management’s dedication to creating a balanced educational experience through initiatives like Pada Pooja is a testament to their commitment to building not only academic excellence but also well-rounded, empathetic individuals.

As the students left the dais, visibly moved and inspired, it was clear that Sri Vidyaranya Avasa Vidyalayam had left an indelible mark on both young minds and the hearts of the parents. The Pada Pooja ceremony stands as a timeless reminder that true education encompasses not only knowledge but also the virtues that build a harmonious, respectful, and grateful society.
