PM Internship Scheme 2024: Govt partners with industries for one-year internship program to boost employment

The Indian government, in collaboration with leading industries, is launching a one-year internship program for individuals aged 21 to 24, providing hands-on experience and a monthly stipend to help bridge the gap between education and employment. This initiative, part of a broader skilling effort, aims to equip over one crore youth with practical skills for better job opportunities over the next five years

In a strategic move to tackle unemployment and provide essential skill-building opportunities to the youth, the Indian government, in collaboration with leading industries, is launching a one-year internship program for individuals aged 21 to 24. This initiative, an integral part of the Prime Minister’s Employment and Skilling Package, is set to benefit thousands of young graduates across the country. This will offer them hands-on experience at some of the nation’s top companies.

The program was first introduced as part of the Union Budget announcements earlier this year, marking the government’s commitment to empower the youth and improve job-readiness among recent graduates. The initiative aims to equip them with the skills and practical exposure necessary to secure long-term employment in India’s rapidly evolving job market.

The portal is live from October 3, 2024, for partner companies. This platform will serve as the primary channel for candidates to apply for the internship opportunities. Participating companies will upload their available internship openings, and candidates will be able to submit their applications starting October 12. The easy-to-navigate portal will enable young job-seekers to browse opportunities by sector, company, and location, making it a user-friendly gateway to these valuable opportunities.

The internship program is designed to be a stepping stone for young professionals who are struggling to break into full-time employment. By providing practical work experience, the government hopes to bridge the gap between academia and industry, particularly for those with limited access to higher education or specialized training.

The internship program is just one element of a larger, ambitious government strategy that aims to provide skill development training to over one crore youth in India over the next five years. This long-term plan is designed to enhance job readiness for young Indians, especially in sectors experiencing rapid growth, such as technology, manufacturing, and services.

One of the standout features of the program is the financial support offered to interns. Selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 4,500, which will be transferred directly to their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Additionally, participating companies are required to contribute an extra Rs 500 per intern per month, sourced from their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.

The combination of the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) stipend and CSR contributions reflects a significant public-private partnership to uplift India’s youth. By leveraging CSR funding, the government encourages companies to take an active role in fostering talent and promoting inclusive growth. The eligibility of companies for the program was determined based on their average CSR spending over the past three years, ensuring that only committed and responsible organisations participate.

The structure of the internship program is designed to offer meaningful exposure to real-world work environments. The participating companies will host interns for a period of six months, during which the interns will be integrated into daily operations and given responsibilities that go beyond classroom learning.

Selection Process

To qualify, applicants must be unemployed and not currently engaged in full-time work. This ensures that the program directly benefits those who are most in need of support and opportunities to enter the workforce. The selection process is designed to be both efficient and transparent. The initial shortlisting of candidates will be managed by a backend bot that screens applications based on predefined eligibility criteria. Following this, the shortlisted candidates will undergo a selection process led by the participating companies, which will include interviews and assessments.

This technology-driven selection process is intended to minimise human bias and ensure that the opportunities are distributed fairly. The use of a bot for the first round of shortlisting reflects the government’s emphasis on incorporating digital solutions to streamline processes and improve transparency.

The program represents a significant collaboration between the government and private sector, highlighting the importance of collective efforts to solve systemic issues like unemployment. By creating a robust pipeline of job-ready individuals, the internship program is expected to benefit not only the participants but also the companies that host them. These organisations will have the opportunity to identify and groom young talent, potentially offering full-time employment to those who excel during the internship period.

By investing in skill development and employment initiatives, the Modi government is aiming to transform the country’s large youth population into a skilled and productive workforce, capable of driving economic growth in the coming years.

The long-term impact of the internship program is expected to be profound. For the participants, gaining exposure to the corporate world and hands-on work experience will lay a strong foundation for their career development. Whereas, for companies, the program represents an opportunity to contribute to the nation’s growth while simultaneously benefiting from the fresh perspectives and enthusiasm that young interns bring to the workplace.

On a larger scale, initiatives like this internship program are critical to addressing India’s youth unemployment crisis. According to the latest data, nearly one-third of India’s youth are unemployed or not engaged in productive activities. By providing organised pathways to employment through internships, skill development, and on-the-job training, the Indian government is proactively addressing unemployment and ensuring that the nation’s youth are well-prepared to meet the challenges of the modern job market.
