BENGALURU: On the occasion of the birth anniversaary of Mahatma Gandhi and also of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, celebrations were held across the country to honour these great leaders. However, in Karnataka, a controversial incident involving Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ignited a political storm, overshadowing the solemn day.

CM Siddaramaiah hoisted the national flag to commemorate the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. At this moment, a Congress worker, while holding the national flag, was seen bending down to untie CM Siddaramaiah’s shoe. The video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism from netizens and political opponents, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The viral video has led to an outpouring of anger, with many questioning the disrespect shown to the national flag and the submissive behavior of the Congress worker. The BJP was quick to seize the opportunity, posting the video on Twitter to criticize the Congress party and CM Siddaramaiah’s leadership.

“The Congress party has no respect for the country and does not respect the national flag. Siddaramaiah, who is in the twilight of his political life, is worried about retaining his seat, so he is indifferent even while holding the national flag,” the Karnataka BJP tweeted, accusing the Chief Minister of being disrespectful to both the flag and the principles of democracy.

Netizens also expressed their frustration on social media, condemning the incident as an insult to the dignity of the country. Many called for CM Siddaramaiah to issue an apology, accusing him of showing a lack of respect to the national flag and condoning the inappropriate actions of his party worker.

The video, which captured the incident during a solemn event meant to honour Mahatma Gandhi, quickly spiraled into controversy. Prominent figures from various sectors, including actors and public personalities, also voiced their displeasure. They argued that such actions are not just an affront to the Chief Minister’s office but also to the honor and respect associated with the national flag.

“This incident is deeply disappointing and reflects poorly on those in power,” said one  netizen  who reacted to the viral video. “The national flag should be treated with the utmost respect. Allowing someone to untie your shoe while holding the flag is completely unacceptable.”

The controversy has erupted at a particularly challenging time for CM Siddaramaiah, who is already facing backlash related to the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) land allotment case.

The incident has intensified scrutiny on CM Siddaramaiah, who is already under pressure due to the ongoing MUDA land scam controversy. The case involves the acquisition of 14 plots in the 3rd and 4th phases of the Vijayanagara layout in Mysore in the name of Siddaramaiah’s wife, Parvathi. Amid rising political tension over the issue, Parvathi recently announced that she would return the plots to the Urban Development Authority in an attempt to defuse the situation.

The timing of the shoe-untying controversy has only compounded CM Siddaramaiah’s political troubles, raising questions about his leadership and the future of his tenure as Chief Minister.

This isn’t the first time that CM Siddaramaiah has found himself in the spotlight for unusual incidents. Previously, he faced a wave of speculation after a black crow sat on his car during a public event, leading many to question whether it was an ominous sign. The latest incident, where a small spark briefly ignited his clothes while lighting a torch for the Kittoor Utsav  in Bengaluru on Wednesday  has also fueled speculation.

Although security personnel quickly extinguished the spark, the incident has been widely shared on social media, with some linking it to the mounting troubles faced by Siddaramaiah’s administration.

Adding fuel to the fire, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy has raised doubts about CM Siddaramaiah’s handling of the ongoing MUDA land case. Kumaraswamy has suggested that Siddaramaiah’s decision to return the controversial plots might be an attempt to cover up evidence. He also questioned the influence behind the actions of the MUDA Commissioner, suggesting that there could be more to the story.

Who influenced the MUDA Commissioner to cancel the site? Is this an attempt to destroy evidence?” Kumaraswamy asked, demanding further investigation into the case.

The latest controversy, coming at a time when Siddaramaiah is already facing scrutiny, raises significant challenges for his political career. The opposition has been quick to capitalize on the viral video and the land scam allegations, portraying Siddaramaiah as a leader disconnected from the values of integrity and respect that are expected of public officials.

While the Chief Minister’s office has yet to officially comment on the shoe-untying incident, the fallout from both this controversy and the MUDA land case is likely to play a crucial role in shaping public perception of Siddaramaiah in the coming weeks. As political tensions escalate, the Chief Minister will need to navigate these turbulent waters carefully if he hopes to maintain his position and safeguard his legacy.

What should have been a day of unity and reflection on the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri has turned into a day of political turmoil for CM Siddaramaiah. The viral video showing a Congress worker untying his shoe during a Gandhi Jayanti event has sparked widespread outrage, further complicated by ongoing scandals involving his administration.

As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how CM Siddaramaiah will respond to the mounting pressure from both political opponents and the public. For now  MUDA land scam  serve as stark reminders of the challenge facing the Chief Minister.
