NEW DELHI: In a major step towards enhancing the protection and mobility of Indian defence personnel, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed an indigenous bulletproof jacket named ‘ABHED’. The advanced bulletproof jacket, which stands for Advanced Ballistics for Energy Defeat (ABHED), has been created in collaboration with researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, under the DRDO Centre for Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) at the institute.
Key Features of ABHED
ABHED is made using cutting-edge materials, including polymer and indigenous boron carbide ceramic. The innovative use of these materials allows the jacket to withstand extreme combat situations while remaining lightweight, making it highly efficient in high-risk environments.
The jacket has successfully passed all required research and development (R&D) tests, demonstrating its effectiveness in meeting the highest threat levels. The armour plates used in the jacket have undergone extensive testing and have been proven to provide robust protection.
One of the key highlights of ABHED is its lightweight design. At just 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg, depending on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications, the jacket is significantly lighter than the general requirements set by the Indian Defence Forces. The jacket’s modular design offers comprehensive 360-degree protection, with front and rear armour plates, ensuring complete body coverage for soldiers in combat.
Collaboration and Innovation
ABHED was designed and developed through a collaborative effort involving material characterization at high strain rates and advanced modelling and simulation. The partnership between DRDO and IIT Delhi has resulted in a breakthrough design that prioritizes both the protection and mobility of soldiers.
A Step Towards Atmanirbhar Bharat
The development of ABHED is seen as a significant leap forward in India’s defence capabilities and a major stride towards the country’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission. The indigenous production of these advanced bulletproof jackets will reduce the country’s reliance on foreign imports, saving a considerable amount of foreign exchange.
Moreover, the success of ABHED is expected to boost India’s defence exports, as several countries have already shown interest in purchasing the jacket. The indigenous production of ABHED will not only enhance the security of Indian soldiers but also position India as a global leader in the manufacturing of defence equipment.
The introduction of ABHED into India’s defence arsenal marks a new chapter in the nation’s pursuit of advanced, homegrown military technology. By reducing dependence on foreign imports and enhancing domestic capabilities, the development of ABHED is a testament to the nation’s growing strength in defence innovation and self-reliance.
