Tensions are rising in Malda, West Bengal, following a distressing incident where the revered murti of Bhagwan Vishwakarma was vandalised at a local Puja Mandap. This act of desecration, unprecedented in its nature for the region, has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice.

The incident occurred during the night of September 17, 2024. The Puja Mandap, set up by an E-rickshaw union in Gajol, Malda district, was the site of the vandalism.

Unidentified miscreants decapitated the murti of Bhagwan Vishwakarma and broke its hands. This was discovered by locals the following morning. Upon discovering the desecration, locals gathered in significant numbers, leading to protests demanding the swift identification and arrest of those responsible.

The community, visibly shaken by this act of vandalism, has been vocal in their outrage. They have not only expressed their grief over the desecration of their deity but are also demanding a thorough investigation. Protesters have called for immediate police action to bring the perpetrators to justice, highlighting the need for security during religious events.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and the perpetrators remain unidentified. Local police have initiated an investigation, although details regarding the progress or any leads are yet to be disclosed. The incident has raised concerns over the safety of religious practices and the potential rise of communal tensions in the area.

This incident marks a disturbing trend, reminiscent of similar acts reported from neighbouring states but unprecedented in its occurrence within West Bengal. The vandalism of religious icons can be particularly provocative in a region known for its diverse cultural and religious fabric, potentially fueling communal discord.

The desecration of the Vishwakarma murti in Malda is more than just an attack on a religious symbol; it’s a blow to the communal harmony of the region. As investigations continue, the focus remains on maintaining peace and ensuring that justice is served, not just to punish the culprits but to restore faith in the coexistence and respect of all religious practices in West Bengal. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the fragile balance of communal peace and the importance of vigilance in protecting cultural heritage.

Recently, there have been repeated attacks on Ganesh Chaturthi Pandals and the processions as well, Organiser compiled a list of as many as 17 such cases happened across Bharat. A report on the same can be found here.
