India’s Nationalist Resurgence: A Decolonial vision shaped by RSS and BJP leadership

India's nationalist resurgence, led by the BJP and RSS, seeks to decolonise the nation's institutions, education, and identity by reclaiming indigenous knowledge systems and cultural pride. This movement fosters unity through diversity, elevating India's global influence while promoting economic self-reliance and sovereignty

As the world experiences a surge in nationalist ideologies, India’s trajectory stands out, driven by a profound reformist zeal under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and shaped by the philosophical vision of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This resurgence of Indian Nationalism is not merely a call for cultural revival but a far-reaching decolonisation project aimed at dismantling the colonial legacies that have long dictated India’s institutions, education, and social structures. The RSS, with its steadfast commitment to reclaiming India’s civilisational heritage, and the BJP, through policy reforms, are leading this nationalist renaissance, reshaping India’s identity and its role on the global stage.

At the heart of this nationalist movement is the effort to reclaim indigenous knowledge systems, cultural traditions, and values sidelined by colonial narratives. The RSS has been pivotal in challenging the colonial frameworks that once shaped India’s intellectual landscape, promoting a return to the richness of India’s ancient wisdom, philosophies, and history. Through sweeping educational reforms, the BJP, inspired by this vision, has sought to liberate India from the vestiges of Eurocentrism, promoting a more authentic and proud portrayal of India’s contributions to global thought. This intellectual decolonisation is central to the revival of Indian Nationalism, restoring cultural pride and sovereignty to a nation that had long been tethered to colonial-era legacies.

The challenges of fostering such a nationalist resurgence are not insignificant, particularly in a country as diverse as India. However, the RSS’s ideology of *inclusive nationalism* has helped the BJP create a vision that celebrates the plurality of Indian cultures while uniting the nation under its shared civilisational values. This vision of decolonised nationalism does not seek to impose a singular identity but to foster unity through diversity, ensuring that the return to India’s roots is inclusive and empowering for all communities.

The opportunities arising from this nationalist renaissance are vast. Under the leadership of the RSS and BJP, India is witnessing a cultural revival like never before, with the global recognition of ancient practices like yoga, Ayurveda, and Indian spirituality. These traditions are not only helping to elevate India’s global soft power but also reconnecting the nation with its civilisational soul. The nationalist agenda is further reflected in the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which advocates for economic self-reliance, fostering local innovation and reducing dependence on foreign systems—an economic decolonisation that seeks to restore India’s industrial and entrepreneurial strength.

On the global stage, India’s nationalist stance aligns it with nations prioritising sovereignty and cultural pride, challenging Western dominance and advocating for a multipolar world. This shift in alliances and strategic partnerships reflects the RSS’s long-held vision of India as a civilisational power with a voice and influence distinct from Western-dominated global institutions. India’s decolonial nationalist outlook allows it to position itself as a global leader with its own philosophical and cultural paradigm, free from external influence.

In essence, India’s embrace of *nationalism, guided by the intellectual and cultural foresight of the RSS and the political leadership of the BJP, is driving the country toward total decolonisation. This resurgence is not simply a return to tradition but a conscious, forward-looking effort to decolonise the nation’s mindset, economy, and global identity. As India forges ahead, it is reclaiming its place as a resurgent force, deeply rooted in its rich heritage yet empowered to shape its future on its terms—a truly free nation in thought, spirit, and identity.
