West Bengal: Kolkata Doctor’s tragic death highlights urgent need to address core causes of crimes against women

The brutal rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata has intensified calls for overhauling the education system, which critics claim fuels moral decline and societal problems. Advocates are pushing for the immediate and effective adoption of the NEP 2020, blending traditional values with modern principles to build moral character and combat such grave offenses

The deadly rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata were widely condemned through various means, including mass gatherings, marches, videos, social media posts, and so on. Molestation and rape have become an ongoing heinous crime against our mothers, sisters, and daughters. Raising our voices occasionally will not fix the problem; we must first grasp the underlying cause and seek to make the required adjustments in the system and society. There are numerous causes, but the primary cause is the educational system.

How many rape instances were reported during ancient times when we followed the Gurukul educational system? There may be a few, but the present number of rapes per hour is too high. The education system we have followed since British rule is a Western education system designed by Macaulay. This school system has never concentrated on character development, ethical and moral education, or research and development capabilities. The primary goal of Macaulay’s education is to instil a greedy attitude that focuses solely on worldly life, with selfishness as the motivator and society and nation as the last priority. This educational system has developed and continues to create artificial machines with undesirable characteristics and traits. The Western culture views women as just objects. Because their educational system has been followed in our country for many decades, our attitude has evolved along the same lines, as evidenced by Bollywood movies and daily TV serials such as Big Boss, which receives a large audience.

The first and most important thing a school can accomplish with a child’s raw and innocent mind is to teach and instil moral values, social behaviour, and patriotic feelings for the nation rather than creating a focus solely on materialistic life. Life skills with moral values are the most important part of the educational system for developing character, and they are non-negotiable even when great materialistic opportunities are presented to our kids. Materialistic features are quickly learnt and understood in later stages of education. How can this form of education be delivered? When we look at the Gurukul system, we can see that old knowledge, science, technology, and innovation are prioritised for the child’s complete growth.

The education system must include spiritual and contemporary knowledge to produce a holistic mentality and a moral character in which ancient practices see a woman as a goddess. The Bhagavad Gita is known as the “Management Guru” because it contains the secret to resolving any issue at the mind, intellectual, memory, ego, and consciousness levels. Given the horrendous crimes against women, a corrupt mindset, and a self-first, nation-last attitude, the New Education Policy 2020 is urgently needed. It is critical that every element of society, particularly our women force, pressure all of our state governments, universities, schools, and colleges to effectively, efficiently, and swiftly implement the New National Education Policy.

The horrible crime against doctors that occurred in West Bengal refused to execute the New National Education Policy. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Punjab, and a few more states declined to adopt it. When dirty politics and dirty mindsets become more important than the bright futures of millions of young people, society must wake up and fight against this menace legally and socially that are destroying everything good for every social sector and nation. Though the Modi government designed the NEP 2020, opposition parties should not criticise the wonderful system based on elections and vote bank tactics.

When political parties, particularly dynasties, play with a society’s emotions and oppose a system that is essentially better for the well-being of future generations, it is high time for society to wake up and unite everyone so that a united fight will pave the way for the implementation of any policy or system that is pro-society and pro-nation. The emphasis should be on implementing NEP alongside the Bhagavad Gita and Vedic wisdom to develop the young and society that every nation desires. States implementing NEP in a phased way, as advised, should focus on the quality and pace of implementation.

Those who oppose national education policy are the true adversaries of our mothers, sisters, daughters, and current and future generations. Society should increase knowledge about these politicians, institutions, and organisations and never support them. The cultural, social, and spiritual degradation that occurred even after independence is exceptionally tragic and disturbing. Why resist positive change when the current government at the centre is working hard to improve the system in the correct direction? The educational system is the foundation of each nation, transforming the raw youngster into a complete character. If education is founded on ancient wisdom and current technology, the nation will be excellent in all aspects; however, we see the creation of a slave mindset due to Macaulay’s education system.

Rape, corruption, drug abuse, mental issues, family conflicts, and social conduct are all inextricably linked and embedded in the educational system. Society and the government must work together to strengthen the educational system. The gap between the current state of learning outcomes and what is required must be bridged through major reforms that bring the highest quality, equity, and integrity into the system, from early childhood care and education to higher education.

The new education system aims to develop good human beings capable of rational thought and action, possessing compassion and empathy, courage and resilience, scientific temper and creative imagination, with sound ethical moorings and values. It aims to produce engaged, productive, and contributing citizens who can build an equitable, inclusive, and plural society as our Constitution envisages.
