Two male teachers, Robert (48) and Nelson (55), were arrested on September 11 for allegedly sexually harassing male students at a government-aided school in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli. The teachers, who were handling Class VII students, were accused by several victims who confided in their parents. A police complaint was subsequently filed.

Earlier, the students had informed the school management about the harassment, but the administration delayed action and reportedly tried to suppress the issue.

Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner Rupesh Kumar Meena ordered an inquiry. Police officers spoke with the students, their parents, school staff, and the accused. Following the investigation, Nelson, a permanent staff member, was suspended, while Robert, a contract teacher, was dismissed from his position.

In another incident, a 20-year-old student named Abhishek from Nungambakkam was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a fellow student.

According to police reports, the assault took place during a party at a star hotel, which the survivor attended with friends a few months ago. The group included the victim and four boys. After consuming alcohol, the victim blacked out, and one of the boys, identified as Abhishek, allegedly assaulted her.

The crime came to light when the survivor visited a hospital, where doctors informed her that she was pregnant. She subsequently filed a police complaint, leading to Abhishek’s arrest. He has been remanded in judicial custody.

A special investigation team (SIT) probing the rape and molestation of girls under 14 at fake NCC camps in Krishnagiri district arrested pastor Daniel Arul Raj (38) from Kaveripattinam on September 10. Arul Raj, a gym teacher, is closely linked to A. Siva alias Sivaraman, a Naam Tamizhar Katchi functionary, who organized the fake NCC camps at Kingsley Gardens Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Bargur Kanthikuppam.

Sivaraman had molested and sexually assaulted the girls who attended the camps. He later died after ingesting poison, and mysteriously, his father died in a road accident on the same day.

With Arul Raj’s arrest, the total number of people taken into custody in the case has risen to 17. In response, the Tamil Nadu government has directed the Directorate of Private Schools to appoint a special officer to oversee the school where the abuses occurred.

The government has submitted an affidavit to the High Court, which is hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a CBI probe into the matter. The SIT, formed by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has also submitted its report to the court.
