CHENNAI: In a move that has sparked widespread condemnation, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, with the assistance of police, stopped the distribution of Annadhan (food offering) at the Sri Pamban Kumara Gurudasar Temple in Tiruvanmiyur, Chennai. The incident occurred while hundreds of devotees were waiting in line to receive the food. Videos of the event have gone viral on social media, prompting a strong backlash from the Hindu community.
Annadhan, a tradition in which food is offered to devotees and the poor as part of temple practices, has been a daily occurrence at the temple, where the revered Tamil saint, Pamban Swamigal, rests in Jeeva Samadhi (memorial). The temple, which is a significant spiritual center for followers of Pamban Swamigal, has witnessed Annadhan for over 30 years.
On September 2, HR&CE officials, accompanied by police, abruptly halted the food distribution. The viral video shows angry devotees protesting the officials’ actions, accusing them of forcibly stopping a long-standing tradition. The workers were seen removing the food vessels and carts under the orders of the officials.
Background: Pamban Swamigal and His Legacy
Pamban Swamigal, a 19th-century Tamil Hindu saint, is renowned for his devotional hymns and poems praising Lord Muruga. His followers, who number in the lakhs across India and globally, visit his Jeeva Samadhi daily at the Sri Pamban Kumara Gurudasar Temple. The Annadhan practice, an essential part of the temple’s activities, has been a means to serve devotees and the underprivileged.
The HR&CE department, which controls the administration of the temple, has been the focus of criticism by Pamban Swamigal’s devotees following a controversial Kumbhaabhishekam (consecration ceremony) held on July 12, 2024. Despite opposition from groups like the Saiva Siddhanta Perumandram, which claimed the ceremony went against Pamban Swamigal’s wishes, the HR&CE department conducted the event following traditional Agama rituals. Since then, the temple’s Annadhan practice has continued, until it was forcibly stopped on September 2.

Rajendran, called the incident an example of a conspiracy to decimate Hindu traditions in Tamil Nadu.
Many users pointed out incidents where religious activities at Hindu temples were restricted by the DMK government, citing the denial of special poojas and Prasad distribution, despite clear court orders. They also highlighted other incidents where non-Hindu religious activities, such as namaz and Bible reading in Hindu temples, were ignored by the authorities.
