On August 7, 2024, thousands of police officers and anti-racism protestors gathered across Britain to counter the anticipated anti-immigration groups following a week of violent racist attacks targeting migrants. The unrest began early last week after three young girls were killed in a knife attack in Southport, Northwest England.
False online messages mistakenly identified the suspect as one migrant, triggering riots. Online posts suggested that the anti-Immigrant protestors would target immigration centres, migration support centres and specialist law firms on August 7, 2024. This led to many businesses closing early and some shops boarding up windows.
In response, thousands of police officers were deployed and large crowds of protestors assembled in cities including London, Bristol, Birmingham, Liverpool and Hastings. They held banners such as “Fight Racism” and “Will Trade Racists for Refugees.” The protestors comprised a diverse mix of anti-racist, anti-fascists, trade unionists, left wing organisations and local residents appalled by the recent riots.
By 8:00 PM GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), no reports of serious disorder had surfaced. Police noted that around 50 people in Croydon, south London had thrown bottles and attempted to cause disruption. Stetson Matthew, a 64-year-old waste collector, joined thousands of demonstrators in Walthamstow, northeast London. An international media agency quoted him as saying “Everybody has the right to do what they need to do, but they must put their voices across peacefully amicably without stress and violence.”
Lucy, a 37-year-old flower-grower who joined a counter-protest in Hastings, southeast England expressed relief at the large turnout. “I felt that I absolutely had to be here tonight to take a stand and it is much easier for me to come as a white woman than some of my non-white friends, so I am here in solidarity.”
The riots last week saw groups of few hundred, mostly men, clashing with police and smashing windows of hotels housing asylum speakers mostly from Africa and the Middle East. The rioters chanted “Get Them Out” and “Stop the Boats” referring to migrants arriving in Britain in small dinghies without permission.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the Labour Party is facing his first major crisis since winning the July 4, 2024 elections has warned rioters that they would face lengthy jail terms. He is determined to quell the worst outbreak of violence in Britian in 13 years, i.e. since the year 2011.
