The issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh into India is far from new, but it has recently gained renewed attention due to a series of provocative YouTube videos that demonstrate and discuss border-crossing techniques. These videos have sparked significant controversy and concern among viewers and authorities alike.

A year ago, a Bangladeshi YouTuber known as DH Travelling Info uploaded a 21-minute video detailing how to cross the India-Bangladesh border without a passport or visa. The video, which has since attracted considerable attention, features the YouTuber and several others demonstrating their journey from Bangladesh to India. The footage starts in Jumgaw Garo village, located in the Sylhet region of Bangladesh, and shows the group making their way towards Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, India.

Approximately seven minutes into the video, the group arrives at a border sign that reads, “The last frontier of Bangladesh—international border. Crossing is prohibited. By order: Authority.” Although the YouTuber stops short of actually crossing into India, he explicitly describes the process and suggests that it is relatively simple. Towards the end of the video, he advises viewers against attempting the crossing without proper documentation, warning of the potential dangers and legal risks involved. Critics, however, view this disclaimer as disingenuous, arguing that the very act of demonstrating the border crossing process could encourage others to attempt illegal entry, similar to how health warnings on cigarette packs may fail to deter smoking.

In addition to DH Travelling Info’s video, another concerning piece of content has surfaced on social media platform X.

Travel blogger Boni Amin shared a video about a Bangladeshi national who travelled to Delhi with the intention of applying for a European visa. When the visa application was rejected, the individual reportedly turned to selling biryani in the Paharganj area to sustain themselves. This video has fueled discussions about the Indian government’s visa policies and the apparent ease with which some individuals from Bangladesh are able to enter India.

Critics have raised significant questions about the Indian government’s practices regarding visa issuance. They point out that over 1,000 visas are reportedly issued to Bangladeshi nationals each day, highlighting concerns about why such a large number of individuals are granted entry. This scrutiny is compounded by the ongoing problem of illegal border crossings, which continue despite stringent regulations.

The proliferation of these videos underscores a pressing issue: the need for more effective measures to address illegal immigration and border security. While these videos are not new, they reveal an enduring problem of unauthorised entry into India, often driven by various personal and economic motives.

The government faces mounting pressure to enhance border controls and implement stricter policies to mitigate the risks associated with illegal immigration.
