Chhattisgarh: Days after video of a calf trampled by a car gone viral, police apprehend accused youth

Chhattisgarh police on June 29 arrested Seikh Sahid, days after his video trampling over a calf in a car had gone viral on the internet prompting sharp reactions from the netizens who termed the incident insane.

Sahid, who was on the run after his video linked to the incident gone viral was apprehended by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Bilaspur police and produced before a court from where he has been sent to jail.

According to the reports, the accused has been nabbed after the police secured details of the vehicle he was driving at the time of the incident. The details were fetched on examining the CCTV footage of the area.

The incident had taken place in Tarbahar area of Bilaspur on June 25 when the accused Sahid knowingly drove his vehicle over a calf sitting on the road as seen in the viral video. Moments later the accused reversed his car and again trample the calf leading to his death on the spot.

The act triggered an outrage among the netizens and animal lovers who while terming it a row display of cruelty demanded immediate arrest of the culprit. After the video gone viral on the internet a number of local Hindu activists also protested against the incident seeking action from the police. Following the outrage, the police constituted a SIT who eventually succeeded in nabbing the accused on June 28.

It must be noted that the State of Chhattisgarh has been on boil over incidents linked to cow smuggling, slaughtering of cow progenies and alleged killings linked to cow smuggling lately.

This include protest over alleged killing of a Bajrang Dal worker, Sujit Swarnkar of Balrampur whose body was recovered near a highway in Balrampur district on May 27.

The incident triggered massive protest from the volunteers of Bajrang Dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) who later alleged that Sujit was active against cow smugglers and was receiving constant threat on his phone prior to his death in mysterious circumstances.

Days after the incident of Balrampur, three men from Uttar Pradesh identified as Chand Miyan, Guddu Khan and Saddam Khan died after sustaining grave injuries in an alleged attack by a group of youths in Arang of Raipur.

The trio were reportedly involved in cattle transportation business who were heading to Orissa when they were allegedly assaulted by a group of youths near Mahanadi bridge of Arang on June 7.

Following the incident, the family members of the deceased along with members of the Muslim community lodged a strong protest over the incident and demanded arrest of the accused while alleging it to be case of mob lynching.

Days later, the police while swinging in action apprehended as many as four people in connection with the case. However, the arrest made by the police prompted a massive protest by the workers of VHP and Bajrang Dal who claimed that the those arrested by the police were falsely implicated under serious charges and the deceased trio made a panic jumped in a largely dried up river fearing police as four of the cow progenies in the vehicle were already dead.

Following the arrest of the youths, thousands of volunteers of VHP and Bajrang Dal held a massive ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ in the capital city on Wednesday, June 26 demanding release of the arrested men. The demonstrators later marched near the City Kotwali police station premises and offered symbolic surrender in solidity with the arrested accused and withdrew only after the police assured of a fair inquiry into the case.
