Tension escalated in Durg city of Chhattisgarh on late Sunday evening, June 23 after a slaughtered head of a cow-progeny (Gau Vansh) was found in Giridhar Nagar area, triggering an outrage among the Hindu community.

Following the incident, the agitated members of the Hindu community along with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers gathered in large numbers near Patel Chowk and Kotwali police station premises subsequently where they warned the administration for an aggressive agitation if the police fail to take action in the case within two days.

According to the information received, the incident which sent shockwaves into the area unfolded near a water tank in ward no 04 under the City Kotwali police station limits irking the residents of the city who started gathering on the spot as soon as the news spread in the area.

The locals along with the Hindu activists then took to the streets demanding immediate arrests of the miscreants behind the provoking act. The agitated residents along with the activists further gathered near Patel Chowk and started sloganeering against the heinous act purported by the miscreants.

Meanwhile, learning about the incident a police team also reached the spot and took the slaughtered head in its possession. The police team also tried calming down the agitated gathering promising swift action into the case.

However, the agitated gathering then marched towards the City Kotwali police station where they reiterated their demand for action into the case. The Hindu activists further while giving an ultimatum of two days for action into the case alleged that the police and administration are not taking these incidents seriously.

“Its look like a deliberate act and if the police and administration fails to take action in the case in two days then Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) along with the Hindu society will shut down Durg. The police and administration are not taking these incident gravely, there are Rohingyas living in the city whose identification should be done as well,” said an office bearer of the VHP.

It’s been learned that after repeated request to withdraw the protest, the police used minor force to disperse the agitated gathering from the Kotwali premises.

“The incident has occurred in the Girdhari Nagar of Durg Kotwali, the police reached the spot after receiving information about the said incident in the evening. Meanwhile a few people who had earlier gathered at the spot have complained that the act was carried out by members of a special community,” informed an official of the police.

We have taken the slaughtered head into our possession and it is being sent for forensic examination, the police team is also looking into CCTV footage, the matter is under investigation, he added.

It is worth mentioning here that the incident has occurred a day after members of the Bajrang Dal submitted a memorandum to the police following an alleged attack on a cow under the Mohan Nagar police station limits.

The Hindu activists in the memorandum submitted on Saturday, June 22 had alleged that the act was carried out by anti-social elements and people with a radical mindset. The memorandum further stated that the attack was carried out by sharp edged weapons and such incidents come to the fore on a regular basis.

The police often do not initiate action in such cases bolstering the morale of such radical people, immediate action should be taken in the case or the Bajrand Dal will be forced to launch an aggressive agitation, it stated further.
