Delhi University (DU) has announced the introduction of a single girl child quota across its programmes beginning in the academic session 2024-2025. This pioneering initiative aims to provide additional opportunities for single girl children under the supernumerary seats category, as stated by DU Registrar Vikas Gupta during a press conference. This new policy is part of DU’s ongoing commitment to enhancing inclusivity in its admission processes. The benefits of this policy are extensive, promoting gender equality, empowering female students, reducing economic barriers, encouraging higher education, and contributing to a diverse and inclusive campus community.

Delhi University (DU) officials have introduced the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) for undergraduate admissions, covering 69 colleges and departments with a total of 71,000 seats available. Although there have been no major changes to the overall admission policy this year, the inclusion of single-girl child reservations is a significant development. The criteria for identifying eligible single girl child candidates are still being finalised, but this move is expected to significantly impact the higher education landscape by promoting gender equality and supporting female students.

The admission process will take place in two phases. The first phase will have registration on the CSAS portal, followed by the second phase, which includes seat allotment. Additionally, a mid-entry option is available for those who miss the initial registration deadline which will enable the students to join by paying a non-refundable fee of Rs 1,000. However, late applicants will not be able to claim seats already allocated to candidates who register as per the official schedule. The CSAS registration portal is currently open for students and will remain accessible for approximately one month. The second phase of admissions will commence following the announcement of the CUET UG results, expected on June 30. Admissions for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses at DU will be based on CUET scores, continuing the practice established last year. Additionally, the university will utilize CUET scores for PhD admissions.

The introduction of the single girl child quota at Delhi University represents a significant stride towards fostering educational inclusivity and nurturing the academic ambitions of female students. This initiative highlights DU’s steadfast dedication to cultivating an equitable academic milieu as it continually refines its admission policies. The implementation of the single girl child quota at Delhi University offers a multitude of benefits, both immediate and enduring.

This plan helps to fix the unfairness between boys and girls in education by giving extra chances to girls who don’t have siblings. These girls might find it hard to go to school because of money or because of how people treat them. This plan shows how important it is to help girls in school and helps to make things fairer between boys and girls. When girls know they have support and are treated fairly, they feel more confident and can do better in school. This can help them get better jobs and do more for their community. The additional seats reserved for them can ease the financial burden and make higher education more accessible, potentially breaking the cycle of poverty. This quota can serve as an encouragement for families to support the education of their daughters, knowing there are reserved opportunities in prestigious institutions like DU. It sends a positive message about the value of educating girls.

On June 3, 2024, Delhi University (DU) will initiate the admission procedures for the School of Open Learning (SOL) and the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB). Admission criteria for undergraduate programs in SOL and NCWEB will rely on Class 12 examination results, while specific postgraduate courses in SOL will also take into account CUET scores. SOL boasts nine undergraduate and eight postgraduate programs, while NCWEB offers 12 combinations of BA programs and B.Com Pass courses across its network of 26 affiliated colleges.

The first list of available spots for postgraduate, B.Tech, and the 5-year integrated law program is planned to come out on June 20, 2024. Delhi University has had a huge response this year, with over 25.99 lakh applications submitted for different programs through the CUET UG system. This includes 7.63 lakh individual candidates. The most popular courses were B.Tech, B.Com Hons, B.Com, and English Honours, showing that many students are interested in these subjects.
