The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has convened an emergency meeting on May 28, 2024 following an Israeli airstrike on a displaced persons camp in Rafah, an international news media agency reported, citing diplomats. Algeria requested the close door meeting, the diplomats said. The country is a non-permanent member of the UNSC.

Israel was condemned by the entire community for its strike on Rafah which has claimed 45 lives. Israel described the strike as a tragic accident and stated that the it was investigating the effects on civilians. A shooting incident involving the death of an Egyptian Guard on the border between Egypt and southern Gaza Strip was reported by the Israeli and Egyptian forces on May 27, 2024. The military claimed to be looking into the situation.

The Israeli military said that the two top Hamas operatives were killed in the night strike on May 27, 2024 strike in Rafah were its intended targets. But it also started a fire which the Arab nations and Palestinians denounced and massacre, according to the international news agency. UN Humanitarian director Martin Griffiths cited the numerous reports of civilian’s casualties that surfaced prior to Israel entry to Rafah.  We have seen the consequences in last night’s utterly unacceptable attack.

To call it a mistake is a messaging that means nothing for those killed those grieving and those trying to save lives. The EU (European Union) was horrified by the news of the strike while President Emannuel Macron said he was outraged and a US national security council said Israel must take every precaution to save civilians. Israeli miliary said it was launching a probe.

Additionally, Israel is worried that the International Criminal Court (ICC) may be ready to issue the state warrant for its government leaders in retaliation to allegations about how the Gaza war was handled. Investigation the cross-border strikes by Hamas on October 7, 2023 and Israel’s devastating military assault on Gaza, the ICC has the authority to accuse persons with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Foreign Minister Katz on May 26, 2024 cautioned Israeli embassies to strengthen their security due to possibility of a wave of anti-Semitism in reaction to the allegations in the Israeli media that the ICC may soon issue arrest warrants for government and military leaders. “We expect the ICC to refrain from issuing arrest warrants against senior Israeli political and security officials,” Katz said. “We will not bow our heads or be deterred and will continue to fight,” he added.
