The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has convened an emergency meeting on May 28, 2024 following an Israeli airstrike on a displaced persons camp in Rafah, an international news media agency reported, citing diplomats. Algeria requested the close door meeting, the diplomats said. The country is a non-permanent member of the UNSC.
Israel was condemned by the entire community for its strike on Rafah which has claimed 45 lives. Foreign Minister Katz on May 26, 2024 cautioned Israeli embassies to strengthen their security due to possibility of a wave of anti-Semitism in reaction to the allegations in the Israeli media that the ICC may soon issue arrest warrants for government and military leaders. “We expect the ICC to refrain from issuing arrest warrants against senior Israeli political and security officials,” Katz said. “We will not bow our heads or be deterred and will continue to fight,” he added.
