In a recent political clash, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of portraying Tamils as robbers. This accusation prompted a swift response from K. Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu BJP Chief, who is currently campaigning in Delhi and other cities in North India for the remaining phases of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
During a rally in Angul, Odisha, PM Modi addressed the issue of missing keys from the Ratna Bhandar, the treasury of the Puri Jagannath temple. He drew a parallel between the search for lost keys in our own homes and seeking divine intervention. Modi expressed concerns over the missing keys, which have been a mystery for six years. He criticised the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for suppressing the inquiry committee’s report on the matter, stating that their silence only deepens public doubt.
Later, at a rally in Cuttack, Modi made a remark about the key of the Shri Ratna Bhandar allegedly going to Tamil Nadu. This comment was seen as an indirect reference to V.K. Pandian, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s close aide, who hails from Tamil Nadu.

In response, CM Stalin took to Twitter, accusing PM Modi of abandoning his role as a “Tamilian” after the elections in Tamil Nadu. Stalin vehemently denied the allegations that Tamils were involved in the theft of property from the Puri Jagannath temple in Odisha. He criticised the Prime Minister for resorting to derogatory language and inciting enmity between states. Stalin called on Modi to uphold the dignity of his position and prioritise the responsibilities of his office over political gains.
Annamlai, as the Tamil Nadu BJP Chief, stepped forward to counter CM Stalin’s accusations. While campaigning in North India, Annamlai defended PM Modi’s remarks regarding the missing temple keys. He emphasised the need for a fair investigation into the matter and urged all parties involved to address the concerns of the people.

Stalin’s remarks came after Modi’s campaign speech in Odisha, where the Prime Minister hinted at the involvement of Tamils in missing temple keys. “Is this not an insult to Tamil Nadu by implying Tamils are dishonest? Why is Modi so hostile towards Tamils? While coming to Tamil Nadu, Modi speaks highly about the intelligence of Tamils, but when he campaigns in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, UP, and Odisha, he portrays Tamils as robbers and is against Tamils. This is double standard, and people will understand it,” Stalin asserted. He further urged Modi to stop making “slanderous comments on Tamils for the sake of votes” and to focus on constructive campaigning by highlighting his government’s achievements.
In a swift response, K. Annamalai released a video statement defending the Prime Minister and criticising Stalin for spreading misinformation. “The CM of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin’s full-time job is to lie. If you see the number of lies he has peddled after becoming CM, if you list them out, you cannot fill them in pages. Another lie he spread today was about the speech of PM Modi in Odisha regarding Tamil people,” Annamalai said.
Annamalai accused Stalin of not reading the facts properly and relying on misleading notes prepared by his advisors. “This video is for M.K. Stalin so that he should know the truth, and his advisors will get to know the truth to post it on Twitter,” he added. Annamalai emphasised the importance of political leaders understanding the culture and values of their people, stating, “The basis of politics is that the PM of India must be someone who belongs to and was born in India. The CM of TN should be a Tamilian, must be from TN, and must know the culture, traditions, and civilizational values of the people.”
Addressing the issue, Annamalai stated, “Tamils are respected everywhere. Tamils must reach heights everywhere, but we must understand the political dynamics of the respective states.” He further highlighted the specific case of VK Pandian, who has served as the private secretary to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for 12 years. Pandian, originally from Tamil Nadu and belonging to the Punjab IAS cadre, has been a prominent figure in Odisha politics, wielding significant influence within the state administration.
Annamalai drew attention to the controversy surrounding the missing key to the treasury of the Puri Jagannath temple, a topic Modi had commented on during his campaign in Odisha. “VK Pandian has been the secretary to the CM for 12 years. So now, where did the key go?” questioned Annamalai. He emphasised the BJP’s promise to retrieve the key and restore the respect of Lord Jagannath, implying that Pandian’s role in the administration could hold answers to the missing artefact.
Asserting the importance of understanding state-specific politics, Annamalai questioned Stalin’s criticism of Modi’s remarks. “Will DMK announce a person who will join the DMK from another state as the CM candidate of TN? Here we talk about the son of the soil, the same applies to Odisha people as well. In TN, we talk about the son of the soil. Does it not apply to Odisha?” he questioned.
Annamalai asserted, “The person who controls it from some other state… BJD is promoting an outsider without respecting the people of Odisha and its culture.” He criticised the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for allegedly prioritising individuals from outside Odisha over indigenous candidates for key positions in the state.
Responding to Stalin’s remarks, Annamalai emphasised the need for understanding the context of Modi’s statements. He defended Modi’s pledge to appoint a person from Odisha as the Chief Minister, stating, “How could Naveen Patnaik allow such a thing in Odisha? This is the political issue today in Odisha.”
Annamalai condemned Stalin’s allegations against Modi, labelling them as “highly condemnable” and reflective of divisive politics. He accused the DMK of fostering divisions based on region, religion, language, and caste, contrasting the BJP’s commitment to unity and inclusivity.
Through social media platform X, Annamalai further criticised Stalin, suggesting that the Chief Minister’s lack of understanding of political contexts led to misguided criticisms of Modi’s statements. He called for an end to divisive politics, asserting the BJP’s determination to distance itself from such tactics.
TMC Chief GK Vasan has accused Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin of deliberately misrepresenting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statements to incite division between the people of Odisha and Tamil Nadu. Vasan asserted that Stalin’s claims were “blatant lies.”
The controversy stems from remarks made by Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who criticized VK Pandian, a Tamilian allegedly influencing Odisha’s politics. Shah’s comments have been seized upon by Dravidian forces as evidence of the BJP’s supposed anti-Tamil stance. Vasan argued that these forces are distorting the BJP’s position to fuel narratives of a North-South divide and promote separatist and anti-Hindu sentiments.
