Dhubri will be a lesson for other LS seats and fellow countrymen. Dhubri LS seat is one of the seats in lower Assam. Dhubri consists of 10 assembly segments of Lower Assam, covering all of South Salmara-Mankachar District and Dhubri districts and part of Goalpara district. The seat borders with Bangladesh. The seat is known for its minority concentration. Even lower Assam is known for high Muslim concentration. As per some estimates this seat has nearly 85 percent plus Muslim voters. This seat has highest electorates and voters among all 14 LS seats in Assam.
The voters of the seat teach lesson to other seats and all to vote. For three consecutive Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 2019 and ongoing 2024 LS elections the seat topped in voting percent. Though in this LS election still 165 seats are yet to go to poll but till now the seat tops in voting percentage.
The seat came into existence in 1952 and till now only Muslims were elected from the seat. Maximum 8 times the Congress party candidates have won the seat. But since 2009, Badruddin Ajmal, perfume baron, of the AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front) is winning the seat. As the electors and voters on Dhubri seat has increased the victory margin of Ajmal is also increasing. In 2009 for the first time Ajmal won the seat by margin of 184419 votes. In 2014 LS election the victory margin has increased to 2,29,730 votes. In 2019 Badruddin Ajmal had almost maintained his victory margin on 2014.
As far as increase in electorates on this seat is concerned their number increased more rapidly than most of the seat. In 2014 LS poll the electorates had increased by nearly 14 percent. In 2019 LS poll the electorates’ number has increased by nearly 20 percent over its 2014 electorates tally. In 2024 LS election the electorate tally on Dhubri seat has increased by 43 percent over 2019.
The voters (electorates who vote) number has also increased from election to election more swiftly than most of the seats. In 2014 the number of voters has increased by 30 percent over 2009. In 2019 LS election the number of voters has increased by nearly 24 percent over 2014. In 2024 nearly 24.50 lakh electorates have exercised their franchise and from 2019 the voters increased by nearly 50 percent on this seat. In 2024 it may also be possible that this may be the highest voters and voting percent.
