It is shocking to learn that a migrant worker from Assam sexually assaulted a little boy in Tamil Nadu, demonstrating the accused’s perverse and salacious nature once again.

Acting on a complaint from the parents of a 5 year old boy, the Perur ( in Coimbatore district) all women police swiftly acted by arresting Jalaluddin, a native of Guwahati in Assam, for raping the boy near Thondamuthur on the evening of May 12.

According to police and media reports, Jalaluddin and the boy stayed in the same area. The boy is also from Assam. His parents are daily wage earners who moved to Thondamuthur six years ago.  Jalaluddin befriended the boy and used to show him pornographic video clippings. On that fateful day, when he was playing, Jalaluddin took the boy to the backside of the residential area and raped him.

The young boy, who could not tolerate the severe pain of the forced physical relation, complained to his mother and narrated what had happened to him.  On hearing this, his father complained to the police. After registering FIR under the POCSO act and IPC, the police arrested the youth on the night of May 13 and produced him before a judicial magistrate court in the early hours on May 14.  He was later lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial custody.

In another incident, Peruvian police arrested a 57 year old security guard on May 13 for molesting a 10-year-old girl on May 11.  The girl is a fifth-grade student, and the accused is his neighbour. It is learned that the girl was playing in front of her house on 11th evening around 4 pm, when the man on an inebriated stage verbally abused her and touched her inappropriately. The victim told her parents about the incident and made a complaint to the police.  The security guard was booked under POCSO act and was arrested on May 13. The judicial magistrate before whom he was produced ordered him judicial custody, and he was lodged in jail.

Many acquittals in POSCO cases in Tamil Nadu says PMK

PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss has expressed anguish over the increasing number of acquittals of accused in POCSO cases. In a statement, he said he wanted the state government to probe the reasons for large number of accused getting acquittals in POCSO cases. He said, “it is a matter of grave concern that the investigations of these cases is going against the objective of the POCSO act to protect children. Anbumani Ramadoss stated, “Police registered a 4,020 POCSO cases in Tamil Nadu in 2021,” citing data that the state crime records bureau in Chennai provided. The number of cases under the trial in POCSO special courts including pending ones, stood at 9,643. Courts have given verdicts in 955 cases, just 9.9 percent of the total cases. Only in 21.1 percent of the cases (202) the accused were convicted, while in 78.9 percent of cases (753) the accused were acquitted. The acquittal of this extent cannot be justified”.

Despite the stringent laws, the victims or survivors could not get justice. something wrong with the prosecution that failed to present the case with testimonials. It will be nice if the state arranges for a special training camp for them to equip with current updates and how to conduct the probe, and present before the court.
