Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana has been expelled from the party for alleged anti-party activities, including spreading false rumours and tarnishing the party’s image, following his remarks on teacher vacancies and other issues in schools in his constituency.
According to the official order from the AAP, it said that Maiserkhana’s membership from the Party has been suspended with immediate effect.
“It has come to the notice of the Party that you have been found involved in anti-party activities and indiscipline. In view of the above, your primary membership from the Party is suspended with immediate effect,” the order stated.
The action comes after Maiserkhana, in a live video, raised concerns over teacher vacancies and other basic issues in schools in his constituency, saying that he had repeatedly urged the government to fill vacant posts so that students could study properly.
While speaking about the issue in his video, Maiserkhana said he had repeatedly appealed to the government for filling teacher vacancies and urged the authorities to address the requirements of schools.
“I am not fighting against schools; I am fighting for them. It is not just my children studying there; children from all over. Children of other people study in these schools,” he said.
Maiserkhana said the issue concerned the education system and the prevailing situation in schools.
“It is a matter of our education system and the current state of affairs. I know what the situation is like in these schools; I could not tolerate it anymore,” he said.
“If I am wrong, I apologise, but I am speaking up today because of the situation we have reached, a situation that has become unbearable after so much patience,” the MLA added.
“I am going live after feeling sad. I kept demanding the filling of teacher posts, but it has not been done yet,” the AAP MLA further said, while directing his criticism at the government led by his own party.
Reacting to the development, Delhi Minister Ashish Sood said, “An Aam Aadmi Party MLA is expressing his distress regarding the schools in his constituency; he mentions having requested the deployment of teachers to a particular school or the construction of a building for another. The so-called ‘model of governance’ of the Aam Aadmi Party was similarly exposed in Delhi.”
“The Aam Aadmi Party resorts to various ploys to divert attention from the real issues, yet such statements by their own MLA clearly expose the hollowness of their claims,” he added.
BJP leader RP Singh also hit out at the ruling party, alleging that the legislator was punished merely for speaking the truth about the condition of government school infrastructure.
Speaking to ANI, Singh said, “AAP MLA Sukhveer Maiserkhana held up a mirror to the AAP Chief Minister, which is why he got him suspended from the party… He is the only MLA whose child studies in a government school. He pointed out that there is a lack of teachers in government schools. He is speaking the truth… Now he is showing the reality.”
Notably, this is not the first instance of an AAP MLA raising questions about the AAP’s much-touted Schools of Eminence. In 2023, ahead of AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal’s visit to inaugurate Punjab’s first School of Eminence in Amritsar, the former IPS officer and Amritsar MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh had pointed out that the school in question was only ‘renovated’ and that it was made a smart school earlier by the previous governments. Later, in June 2025, Pratap Singh was suspended from the party for five years and accused of allegedly indulging in anti-party activities. Pratap Singh had remained critical of the government on various issues.
BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu shared the video and attacked the Punjab government over its education claims.
“Camera Claims vs Punjab’s Ground Reality! The tears of Aam Aadmi Party’s own MLA, Sukhveer Maisarkhana, expose the ground reality behind Punjab’s much-publicised ‘education model’” he said.
In the video, Maiserkhana also appealed for adequate teaching staff in government schools and spoke about the difficulties faced by students due to the shortage. His remarks drew attention after he appeared emotional while raising the issue on social media.
Following the MLA’s public criticism, Punjab AAP general secretary Harchand Singh Barsat announced that Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana had been suspended from the party with immediate effect.
Issuing the suspension, Barsat stated, “It has come to the notice of the party that you have been found involved in anti-party activities and indiscipline. In view of the above, your primary membership from the party is suspended with immediate effect.”
