Dr S Somanath, Chairman of ISRO and Space Commission and Secretary of the Department of Space, has stated that ISRO’s aim is to elevate the country’s space industry into a US dollar 10 billion enterprise. He made these remarks while speaking at Kochi in connection with the launch of a ‘zero emission’ initiative.

Dr S Somanath stated that the Indian space industry is currently experiencing growth and development, offering ample opportunities for the private sector. He mentioned that the Union Government envisions the country’s space industry to grow from a US dollar 2 billion to a US dollar 9 to 10 billion enterprises over the next 5 to 10 years. Additionally, he noted that about 400 private sector enterprises have benefited from the technologies developed by ISRO for various missions, taking advantage of the new initiatives in the space sector by the Government of India.

Dr S Somanath planted a sapling to inaugurate the carbon-neutral mission. Afterwards, he interacted with the company’s engineers and management team, which launched the ‘zero emission’ initiative.

Dr S Somanath’s disclosure is a revelation for laypeople who may not be well-versed in space technology and its advantages in everyday life. They may not have understood how space technology enhances and develops the economy of the country and the amenities they enjoy. For generations, they have heard that space technology, spacecraft, and space exploration are wasteful and unnecessary exercises perpetuated by some political outfits and sections of the media. However, Dr. Somanath’s speech effectively clarifies the significance of space technology.
