The Maldives Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon has admitted that its military lacks pilots capable of operating three aircraft donated by India days after the last of the Indian defence personnel left the island nation. “There aren’t many people licenced to fly the aircraft,” said Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon at a media briefing in Male on May 12, 2024.
Maumoon explained that the Maldives soldiers who began their training to fly the aircraft under previous administrations were unable to complete the programme due to unspecified reasons. The Indian personnel left Maldives on May 10, 2024, adhering to a deadline set in February this year. This agreement followed a demand made by the Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu known for his pro-China stance shortly after taking office in November 2023.
