The Maldives, famous for its beautiful beaches and clear waters, has extended a heartfelt invitation to Indian tourists. It is urging Indians to become an integral part of its tourism industry again. This appeal comes at a crucial time as the archipelago nation deals with a sharp decline in Indian visitors. In a recent interview with news agency PTI, Maldivian Tourism Minister Ibraham Faisal emphasised the deep-rooted historical connections between India and the Maldives. He emphasised how important it is to work together and be friends. Faisal talked about how much tourism helps the Maldives’ economy and asked Indian tourists to help make it better and last longer.
The number of Indian tourists going to the Maldives went down at the same time, and a big argument on social media started because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tweet about the Lakshadweep Islands. This tweet, posted on January 6, caused a lot of debate after three officials from the Maldives said bad things about India and Prime Minister Modi on different social media sites. After Modi’s tweet, these officials, like Mariyam Shiuna, who is a Deputy Minister, used strong words, calling Modi names like ‘clown’ and ‘puppet of Israel’. This back-and-forth on social media made things worse between India and the Maldives, upsetting Indian people and important figures.
These comments, along with the Maldives getting closer to China in politics, made a lot of Indian tourists angry. They started cancelling their trips, which caused a big decrease in visitors. The main reason for this drop is the tense relationship between India and the Maldives, made worse by President Muizzu’s actions. He promised to kick out Indian soldiers from the Maldives, which made things even more strained.
In a move that further strained bilateral ties, Muizzu compelled the withdrawal of 88 Indian military personnel stationed at three aviation platforms gifted by India to the Maldives. His Government’s stance shows they want less Indian involvement in the Maldives, agreeing with claims that India interferes too much in their affairs.
The Maldives is having a tough time with fewer tourists coming, especially from India. Reports show that there’s been a huge drop of 42 per cent in Indian tourists visiting during the first four months of this year compared to last year. Only 43,991 Indian tourists came until May 4, which is much less than the 73,785 who visited during the same time last year. This is a big worry for the Maldives because tourism is a major part of their economy, and if fewer people visit, it causes a lot of problems. The data from the Maldives Tourism Ministry confirms this worrying trend.
Even with all the problems, Maldives is still an important neighbor for India in the Indian Ocean area. Things like ‘SAGAR’ and the ‘Neighborhood First Policy’ show how much India cares about being friends with Maldives for peace and growth in the region. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has maintained a strategic approach towards enhancing relations with the Maldives.
Given the strategic maritime location of the Maldives, India and the Maldives work together to keep the seas safe. They team up to watch over the waters, rescue people in trouble, and make sure everyone knows how to handle things if there’s an emergency. This helps stop things like pirates and other dangerous activities at sea.
Even though there have been some issues between India and the Maldives lately, India still wants to work together with them in a positive way. They understand that things are changing in the area around the Indian Ocean, and they want to find ways to work together that help both countries.
As both countries deal with complicated diplomatic issues, the Maldives still wants Indian tourists to visit, saying it’s good for both countries. They stress how important it is to keep the friendship strong and the tourism industry going. But when there are problems between the two countries, it affects the Maldives a lot because their economy depends a lot on tourists. So, when fewer Indian tourists come, it shows how much the Maldives’ economy can suffer because of problems between countries.
