To ensure that educational resources remain up-to-date and relevant, the Education Ministry has directed the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to mandatorily have an annual review system for all textbooks. This decision has been made as a part of the Ministry’s commitment to encourage learning environment and fulfill the needs of students.
Highlighting the rationale behind this directive, an official of the Education Ministry official stressed how important it is to keep NCERT textbooks updated and not let them become outdated. “NCERT books once published should not remain the same for many years,” the official stated. “They should be reviewed every year before printing, incorporating any necessary changes or additions, such as emerging topics like Artificial Intelligence (AI).”
Previously, while there was no fixed mandate for yearly textbook reviews, the NCERT had been revising and updating content since 2017. Notably, major changes took place in between 2022-2023 to make studying easier for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As per senior officials within the Ministry, it is of utmost importance that students receive the latest and most pertinent educational resources. “When students acquire textbooks for the upcoming session, it’s imperative that they are the most recent editions,” the official emphasized. This proactive approach resonates with the Ministry’s overarching goal of fostering excellence and innovation in the realm of education. Also, the textbooks revisions are in line with the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF) which was released as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 implementation. It might take up to two years to update all the textbooks for every class, but it has already started, and new books are out for some classes.
This year, the NCERT has made substantial changes to textbooks, particularly in subjects like History, Political Science, and Sociology. They took out parts about controversial topics like the Babri Masjid, the 2002 Gujarat riots, politics related to Hindutva, etc. Instead, they should focus more on current things like the changes in Article 370 and used different words to talk about political situations.
Regularly updating NCERT books every year is very important for a few reasons. When the books get updated yearly, they can include the newest findings and developments in different subjects like science, history, and more. Since these areas are always changing, it’s important for the books to have the latest information, so students can learn the right things.
