In a disturbing turn of events, the peaceful village of Ichamati in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district has been rocked by the brutal murders of two innocent Hindus, Ishan Singh and Sujit Dutta. The tragic incident occurred following an anti-CAA rally, despite the district being exempted from the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as a sixth scheduled state. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has condemned the killings, highlighting the persistent violence and discrimination against non-tribal or minority communities in the region.

The murders, widely reported in the media, have reignited concerns over the safety and security of minority communities in Meghalaya. The VHP has labelled the attack as a pre-planned move by “unknown groups” to instill fear among non-tribal minorities, who have been subjected to racism and unprovoked attacks for years, with little to no accountability from the authorities. The VHP wrote a letter to the President of Bharat, Draupadi Murmu and has sought her intervention in the case.

In response to this grave injustice, the VHP has called for urgent intervention, urging the following measures:

Thorough Investigation by CBI/NIA: The VHP demands a comprehensive investigation by either the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice.
Special Court Hearing: It calls for the matter to be heard by a special court to ensure timely delivery of justice.
Compensation, Jobs, and Security for Victims’ Families: The VHP emphasises the need for adequate compensation, employment opportunities, and enhanced security measures for the families of the victims.
Collective Action to Ensure Safety: Urgent and collective action is requested to safeguard the safety and dignity of all minority communities in the region, while also curbing the activities of lawless individuals and groups.
Administrative Accountability:  The VHP demands administrative action against those responsible for allowing the rally, despite the existence of the Election Model Code of Conduct and the inapplicability of CAA to the state.

The VHP stands in solidarity with the victims and their families during these trying times, calling for justice, protection, and accountability. It urges authorities to act swiftly and decisively to address the root causes of such violence and prevent future atrocities against minority communities in Meghalaya and beyond.
