Telangana: Police arrest Ali & 4 others for assaulting man with burqa-clad wife doubting interfaith relationship

In response to a viral video depicting an alleged moral policing incident near Macca Masjid in Hyderabad, the South Zone police have established special squads to track down and apprehend the perpetrators. The incident involved a man named Ali and his associates harassing a couple, presumed to be from different religious communities, prompting widespread outrage on social media.

On March 26, a video circulated online capturing the harassment of a man accompanied by his burqa-clad wife and their young child near Hyderabad Charminar. The assailants, led by Ali, confronted the couple, questioning the man’s association with a woman from a different community. Despite the wife’s pleas, the assailants persisted, physically assaulting the couple and snatching their daughter away.

The perpetrators assumed that the man belonged to the Hindu community, whereas the woman from the Muslim, despite the woman’s claim of being from the same religious background.


Drawing from the video evidence, police initiated a suo motu case, identifying four suspects as potentially minors and designating one as Ali. These individuals were swiftly taken into custody and placed in a juvenile detention facility. The police have vowed to pursue severe consequences for anyone disturbing the peace. Four specialised squads have been deployed to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the assault.

The incident, brought to light by a complaint filed by B. Rahul from Mailardevpally, prompted immediate action from the Charminar police. South Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police P Sai Chaitanya formed specialised teams to address the issue and prevent further local tensions. Authorities have assured the public that efforts are underway to capture the remaining offenders.

On March 29, at morning hours, police arrested Shaik Ayan @ Ali, Syed Firdous, Mohd. Shadab, and Mohd Farhan Ahmed, all residents of the old city Hyderabad, which is represented by AIMIM MLAs and MP’s.

Venkatapuram, Balapur, Mohd. Shadab, S/o. Mohd. Salauddin, age 19 yrs occ: plumber, R/o. Bandlaguda, Hyderabad, Mohd Farhan Ahmed, s/o Mohd Abdul Waheed, age: 19 yrs occ: Pvt job r/o Shalibanda, Hyderabad.

The Hyderabad police have invoked sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 323 (voluntarily causing pain), 504 (deliberate insult to provoke), and 295 (intent to insult religion), alongside provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act due to the involvement of minors in the assault. Legal proceedings are underway to ensure justice is served.

Commissioner of Police, Charminar Division, Hyderabad.

Recent months have seen a concerning uptick in reported hate crimes allegedly involving individuals from the Muslim community against non-Muslims.

On March 24, Muslim youth attacked Hindus women (scheduled Tribes) who were preparing for Holi celebrations at their home with cultural songs, at Pittala Basti in Chengicherla village, Medchal-Malkagiri district, Telangana. Pittal Basti is primarily populated by nomadic people (scheduled tribes).

On the same day, a 20-year-old man identified as Mohammad Sameer Syed viciously murdered his Praneeth Teja, also 20 on suspicions regarding Praneeth’s alleged involvement with his sister.

In a tragic incident of hate-fueled violence, Nagaraju, a 25-year-old, was fatally attacked in front of his wife, Syed Ashrin Sultana, in Hyderabad’s Saroornagar in May 2022. The convicted murderes were Syed Mobin and Mohammed Masood.
