Chief election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar clears air about elections in Jammu and Kashmir

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar revealed that assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted soon after the Lok Sabha polls. This update comes amidst heightened anticipation regarding the electoral landscape of the Union Territory, which has been under President’s Rule for the past six years.

Addressing reporters in New Delhi, Kumar stated that the Election Commission is committed to holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha 2024 elections. He emphasized that while there were suggestions to conduct simultaneous central and state polls in the region, logistical and security challenges rendered this approach unfeasible.

According to Kumar, the administrative machinery and security considerations make it impractical to accommodate the large number of candidates expected to contest the assembly elections alongside the Lok Sabha polls. However, he assured that the Election Commission is resolute in its commitment to facilitating democratic processes in Jammu and Kashmir and will initiate the polling process soon after the conclusion of the parliamentary elections.

The announcement comes amidst the unveiling of the dates for the Lok Sabha polls, scheduled to take place from April 19 to June 1. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vying for a third consecutive term and the Congress-led opposition bloc aiming to challenge their dominance, the electoral landscape of the country is poised for significant political shifts.

While there was speculation regarding the inclusion of Jammu and Kashmir’s election dates in today’s announcement, the Election Commission chose to focus solely on the Lok Sabha polls. However, it was confirmed that the parliamentary election in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in five phases, spanning from April 19 to May 13.

The anticipation for assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir has been mounting since December last year, when the Supreme Court issued a directive mandating the conduct of an assembly election in the Union Territory by September 30, 2024. This directive, which forms part of the verdict on petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370, underscores the significance of restoring democratic processes and statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

As the electoral landscape continues to evolve, the Election Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections in Jammu and Kashmir remains unwavering. The forthcoming assembly polls are expected to pave the way for the restoration of democratic governance and the reintegration of the Union Territory into the national mainstream.
