In a breakthrough for the security forces grappling against the left-wing extremists, a Maoist carrying a hefty bounty on his head has been arrested during a counter-insurgency operation in Maoist-infested Bijapur of Chhattisgarh, according to media reports.

According to the details, dreaded Maoist Sudhakar alias Undaam was nabbed during a joint operation launched by the personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), and district police on Thursday, March 14.

The accused, Sudhakar, was reportedly a Divisional Committee Member (DVCM) of the outlawed CPI Maoist who was nabbed when the forces were combing in the forest area adjoining Puverti of Gundam.

Sudhakar (55) had reportedly joined the Maoist outfit in 1996 and rose to the ranks of the DCVM in subsequent years. He was allegedly involved in hundreds of acts of violence, looting, murder, and arson, for which a total of 108 cases have been pending against him in separate police stations in the State.

According to the reports, as many as 38 cases against Sudhakar have been pending within the Maded police station limits, an area where he was once operating as the commander of the Maded Area Committee of the outlawed CPI Maoist.

Further, he has a total of 27 cases pending against him in the Basaguda police station limits of Bijapur district. Its been learned that a bounty of Rs 8 lakh has already been placed on his head by the State government.

Recent arrest and surrender of top Maoist

It is worth mentioning here that earlier, in a separate operation launched on real time information provided by the Jharkhand police, the Chhattisgarh police also nabbed an area commander of the outlawed Jharkhand Jan Mukti parishad (JJMP), a splinter group of the CPI Maoists from Jashpur.

Maoist commander Tunesh Lakda was arrested along with his companions from Karama village under the Narayanpur police station limits of Jashpur on March 13. The police team had also seized an AK-47 and live cartridges from the possession of the accused.

Notably, earlier, the Organiser reported the surrender of another JJMP commander, Manohar Parahiya who was active as an zonal commander of the banned outfit and was carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh.

The surrender took place before the senior officials of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Jharkhand police, where Parahiya’s close aide Deepak Bhuiyan, the area commander of the same outfit, had also surrendered.

Days after the surrender of Parahiya and Deepak, another seasoned Maoist carrying a bounty of Rs 8 lakh on his head had also surrendered before the police, citing frustration with the Maoist ideology in Sukma of Chhattisgarh in February itself.

The surrendered Maoist had been identified as Nagesh, aka Erra, company commander of the People’s Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA) battalion no. 01. The surrender occurred under the flagship “Poona Narkom” campaign being jointly run by the police and the administration in the Maoist affected Sukma district.
