Tensions flared during an annual gathering at Homoeopathic Medical College Akola in Maharashtra on Sunday (January 28) when Muslim students called for an apology from their peers for staging a scene depicting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s confrontation with the Islamist tyrant, Afzal Khan. The incident occurred during a traditional Marathi song-dance performance known as Powada, part of the institute’s cultural program.

According to eyewitnesses, as the Powada unfolded, depicting the historic event of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s encounter with Afzal Khan, some Muslim students reportedly walked out, citing offence to their religious sentiments. They later returned and demanded an apology from the performers, claiming the portrayal had hurt their feelings.

Manish Khade, a student at the institution, recounted the incident, stating, “During our college’s cultural program, we presented a Powada depicting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s history. However, students from certain communities left during the performance and later insisted on an apology from the performers.”

Reports indicate that the Muslim students compelled the performers to issue an apology on stage, sparking outrage among local Hindu organisations.

Responding to the incident, representatives of Hindutva organisations swiftly arrived at the college, urging the administration to take disciplinary action against those involved. Mayur Mishra of ‘Sanatani Sanghatana’ condemned the incident, emphasising the need for accountability. He stated, “Such behaviour is unacceptable, particularly in Maharashtra, the revered land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The college must act decisively against the perpetrators.”

Pankaj Sable, the district president of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), echoed similar sentiments, asserting that Maharashtra’s legacy is intrinsically tied to the valour of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He called for the immediate expulsion of the students responsible for disrespecting the revered historical figure. Sable warned of further action if similar incidents were to occur in the future, emphasising MNS’s unwavering support for students.

The episode underscores simmering tensions surrounding cultural and religious sensitivities on college campuses and highlights the need for dialogue and mutual respect among diverse student communities.
