In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the community of Giridih in Jharkhand, a woman named Afsana Khatoon was apprehended on December 29 for the alleged murder of her two-year-old son. The distressing event took place in Golgo, within the jurisdiction of the Bengabad Police Station area.

According to accounts from the family, the tragic episode unfolded when Afsana Khatoon was engaged in a phone call. The toddler, during this time, began crying loudly, reportedly irritating the mother. Instead of consoling the child, the family alleges that Afsana, overwhelmed by anger, resorted to strangulating her son, resulting in his untimely death.

Afsana Khatoon had been married to Nizamuddin, who is deaf and mute, for six years. The couple resided in Suggasar village in the Pachamba police station area and were parents to two sons. The elder son is four years old, while the younger victim of the tragedy was merely two.

The incident unfolded on the night of December 28 when a heated argument erupted between the husband and wife. Subsequently, Afsana expelled her husband from the room, locking herself in with her younger son. It was during this isolation that, allegedly irritated by the child’s crying, she pushed him off the bed, causing him to fall to the floor.

The gruesome act came to light when Afsana summoned her husband back into the room to sleep. Upon his arrival, the devastated father discovered their son unconscious. Efforts to rush the toddler to the hospital proved futile, as he had succumbed to his injuries by then.

In her defense, Afsana Khatoon claimed that she had no intention of causing harm to the child and attributed her actions to anger stemming from the earlier quarrel with her husband. She stated that the infant’s cries had infuriated her during the phone call, leading to the tragic outcome.

However, Rojan Ansari, Afsana’s father-in-law, expressed suspicions about the incident. Hailing from a family of laborers in Uttar Pradesh, Ansari disclosed that Afsana had recently returned from U.P. and had been consistently engaged in phone conversations. He suspects foul play and believes Afsana may have strangled his grandson.

Upon receiving the information, police station in-charge Vikas Paswan took prompt action, bringing Afsana and the deceased child to the police station from Golgo on Friday morning. The baby’s body was handed over to the grieving family following a post-mortem examination at Sadar Hospital.

A case has been registered, and Afsana Khatoon has been remanded to jail as the authorities continue their investigation into this tragic incident. The community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating loss, seeking answers to the inexplicable act that claimed the life of a young child.
