Nerul, New Mumbai, December 4: In a shocking incident on December 4, a 21-year-old college student, Nisha Kumbhar, waiting for a bus at a Nerul bus stop, fell victim to a vicious assault by a stranger. The alleged assailant, identified as Hussain Imam Hasan Shamshu, a 26-year-old beggar in the Nerul area, has been taken into custody by the police.

The assault, characterised as an attempted murder, unfolded around 1:30 pm as Nisha, a resident of Airoli, waited at the bus stop with her friend, Khushi Kadam, following her semester examination at a Nerul college. Witnesses say the attacker approached Nisha wielding a glass bottle, striking her head. The bottle shattered upon her resistance, prompting the assailant to attempt stabbing her with the broken bottle in the abdomen.

Despite Nisha’s resistance, she sustained severe injuries to her waist and lower abdomen. Prompt intervention by two individuals at the scene caused the assailant to flee. Nerul police quickly responded to the incident, transporting Nisha to a nearby private hospital for immediate medical attention.

A subsequent investigation, aided by CCTV footage from the vicinity, led to the identification and swift arrest of the alleged attacker, Hussain Imam Hasan Shamshu. Senior Police Inspector Tanaji Bhagat from the Nerul police station reported that the accused, a local beggar, exhibited erratic behavior possibly attributed to paranoia and mental illness, according to statements from some local witnesses.

Nisha Kumbhar is currently undergoing treatment at the nearby hospital, and the police are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the brutal attack. The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of individuals at public spaces, prompting authorities to address security measures at bus stops in the Nerul area.
